Portobello High School - Environment Green Flags

Post by Epykat » 04 May 2007, 08:42

PHS has just become the first secondary school in Scotland to attain the third (and final - so it's forever!) Eco Flag :D

Fanstastic news and an oustanding achievement, especially given their current working environment. It blows my mind to think how ECO they will be when they have a school integrated into parkland setting and outdoor learning is part of the curriculum! 8)

But we've already done it without the aid of a playing field

I'd heard it was now 4 stars before it was for keeps but congratulations.

These things dont come easily. Everyone involved at the school should be feeling really proud and chuffed about this - and to be the first secondary school in Scotland too. Would anyone out there like to say a bit more about the work involved in getting this award?

You may be interested to know that on hearing of this impending award at the CC meeting on Monday night, Stephen Hawkins was so impressed that he saw fit not to congratulate the school on their efforts but to complain about the amount of litter that PHS pupils drop.

Please note that this statement has now been withdrawn and a public apology has been offered, later in this thread, to Stephen Hawkins by Bob Jefferson.

According to www.ecoschoolsscotland.org
The Green Flag Award must be renewed every two years. A school is considered to be a permanent Eco School once it has gained its Fourth Green Flag.
Even if this is the case, PHS deserve a big clap on the back for their efforts.

Absolutely out of order and, if you don't mind me saying so, a complete and utter lie, Bob. Are you going to be constantly sniping at our new councillor for the next few years? Don't get all bitter about people who have different opinions to you. It's not worth it and life's too short.
Getting an Eco award in a school that we are told is not fit for purpose is not a bad achievement

I stand corrected. I am reliably informed that, contrary to my recollection, it was Diana Cairns who made the complaint about the litter. My sincere apologies to Stephen for this error.

3 is still a fantastic achievement and I am sure they will already be working towards number 4. 8)

Portobello High has been named Scotland's greenest school, despite being in a dilapidated state, and takes its green credentials very seriously.

It was awarded its fourth Eco Schools Green Flag in 2009, leading to it becoming the first secondary school in Scotland to achieve permanent Green Flag status.

It is being rebuilt after being rated the school in the worst condition in the Capital.

The new building will be in complete contrast to the current 1960s tower block which has virtually no green space.
