The
"Edinburgh Waterfront Promenade Design Code" has now been published in draft form for consultation before final adoption as supplementary planning guidance. This is the plan formally known as the "Boardwalk" back in 2006, which has been
discussed here before.
For the full break down see:
edinburgh.gov.uk/ ... CEC_edinburgh_boardwalk
At this stage we would welcome your comments on the content of the Design Code and the proposed destination nodes and the section(s). Your views on the proposed phasing plan would also be welcomed.
We would also like to hear your views on the following:
What surface treatments are most appropriate?
Are the node(s) in the right locations?
What should be in the node(s)?
What street furniture is needed?
What should the signage look like?
Are the transport connections adequate?
And, What other issues should we be aware of?
Comments on the Design Code should be sent by Friday
18 July 2008 to:
- Kate Evans - kate.evans@edinburgh.gov.uk
City Development Department,
City of Edinburgh Council,
G1: Waverley Court,
4 East Market Street,
Edinburgh, EH8 8BG
Obviously it's worth giving the whole design code read if you are interested in it, but there are a few sections specifically related to Joppa, Portobello and Seafield (proposed dates of implementation in brackets):
All links are PDFs, around 200k each.

483m
Ownership: Public
Status: Not available
Phasing: 2028 - 2037
Description: From point E, the route joins the highway
footpath (approximate width of only 1200mm, reducing in
places to about 900mm). It is unattractive, dangerous and
difficult to negotiate.
At point F, the existing footpath turns off Seafield Road down
adjacent to the railway line to the corner of the water treatment
works at F1.
Proposals: Construct promenade to Design Code
specifications. A design solution is required here for the new
section of Promenade required. Between E and F1.
Sections (E-F and F1)
Fillyside
Character Area 3
Seafield
This the bit that could join the existing prom to something else - its dangerous and difficult and creates a problem with pedestrian and cycle movements?
Oh yes. lets leave that for another 20 yrs then
whoo hoo! easy tiger!

I will be 69 when they start getting round to it!! By that time the existing prom will be dangerous and difficult to negotiate, for me at least.

Yep, it's sobering to think that many of us are now at that stage of our careers when we will be lucky to see what is proposed.

Some of the time lines are eyewatering, but it's a long term plan... Clearly it'll still be subsections right through to completion.
I was impressed to see some near time plans for a section of the Prom. Plus the indication that the Seafield section should be reduced in width with landscaping is interesting. Also favourable words on materials for the surface.
This is a good chance for feedback to help shape the final guide. In particular there is a lot of questions on signage that the Prom really needs...
It it seems the "no cycling" mantra is dead, what with this and the proposed core paths.

There will be plenty of debate about the detail but I'm sure this is a project that everyone will welcome, in principle at least. And if it looks anything like the Promenade des Anglais then no-one will be complaining. If only we had the Cote d'Azur weather to go with it.
