Bath Street - New parking restrictions

Post by Puerto bella » 23 Apr 2009, 21:14

Notice up in street, outside no.44 asking for comments on proposed new parking restrictions if anyone is interested? Proposal is to have double yellows opposite junction with Straiton Place.

I wouldn't have thought that Bath St residents would be very happy about this since parking is already at a premium anyway. Aren't there communal bins there as well? I often have to drive into Straiton Place from Bath St and vice versa and I can't say that I have ever found it to be a problem. Getting a fire engine round, on the other hand, might be tricky but that applies to most streets in Portobello.

Be better if they made Bath Street one way
Opposite Straiton Place IS where the bins are.
I'd have thought that "bay" was ideal for parking cars.
Parking is a problem around here. I had to park several streets away when coming home at around 11pm the other night

Parking is a problem in lots of areas in Porty.

In my street its full of cars that belong to staff at RBS and shoppers from the high street.

You'd be surprised at how many folk feel the need to drive on the pavement around the Straiton Place corner. Its a nightmare. We take our life in our hands going out the front door. People trying to cross the road also have problems with selfish drivers. Articulated vehicles turn in the street at that point to reverse down to the businesses on the Prom and I think we are up to 3 insurance claims now for having guttering knocked off, wall bashed etc. Whether the proposals will solve this though is another matter. I too, like Soupy, believe the route to a safer street (excuse the pun) is a one way system - seem to remember bringing this up about 10 years ago with PAS and on here in the past couple of years as well.

One of the arguments against one-way streets is that they encourage motorists to drive faster, safe in the knowledge that nothing is going to come the other way. That may result in more injuries to pedestrians.

Bollards on the corner might help protect people and property but these streets certainly weren't built for articulated lorries.

Good points Bob, but I think the street is narrow enought and has traffic calming so the speed is limited by these features.

On the bollard issue I have been trying to get the council to put a bollard at the corner or some other similar obstacle like a section of railing to protect pedestrians and our house but there has been no take up of the idea.

I have also tried to get them to limit the size of vehicles coming down the street as too many times have I seen problems. I've even resorted to speaking to the manager of the coop to get him to stop his delivery lorries coming down and the George Bingo whose coach drop offs often get stuck. They listen for a while but without any signage to prevent the vehicles there isn't a lot we can do.

The confusing speed signage in Straiton Pace doesn't help any.

Coming into Bath St., Regent St., Marborough St., Bellfield St there are 20 mph signs. Which would imply the whole area is 20mph
In Straiton Place there is a sign to say 20mph on one side but 30 on the other
I have tried phoning the council to ask but get the same routine as when I asked about the grey pole ( without signs ), passed from one dept to another or put on hold until cut off

And how many cars coming down Bath St pay attention to the oncoming traffic has right of way sign

The addition of a No Through road sign at the Bath Street junction with Straiton Place would be an improvement. I see several cars going to the end of the road then reversing, the drivers not realising that next stop is the Forth. These are not just people on the hunt for a parking space..
