Here is the News
The Scottish Arts Council and Edinburgh City Council have agreed to fund Big Things on the Beach to involve the public in creating a Public Art Plan for Portobello Promenade. We call the project Imagine Porty Prom. Full information about the project can be found at
bigthingsonthebeach.org.uk.
Imagine Porty Prom
In July we will launch a year long programme of activity, including a number of temporary arts commissions, to enable local people and visitors to Portobello to share their imaginings about the Promenade of the future, what we would like to experience when we are there and how we would like to feel about it. The Public Art Plan we create will be incorporated into the development of the City Council's Edinburgh Promenade project to develop the full 17 miles of Edinburgh's shoreline.
Jobs with Big Things on the Beach
To get the project under way we are looking for two key people; a full time Participation Worker to create opportunities for public involvement and a Public Art Consultant to ensure that we are outward looking, meet the highest standards and produce a professional and 'do-able' Plan. Follow the links on the website to find out more about these positions and pass on the information to any of your contacts who might be able to offer the skills and experience we need.
Garden Gallery
We have not been so fortunate with funding for the Garden Gallery this year; the idea has been turned down by all the major trusts we approached. However, we will be able to stage a smaller Garden Gallery in August as part of the Imagine Porty Prom Project. This will mean that many potential hosts will be disappointed but we hope you will understand that this is a difficult year for funding of all kinds and that you will find other ways of becoming involved in Big Things on the Beach in the next twelve months. We will be writing to hosts shortly with additional information.
Public Art House
From July, Big Things on the Beach will have its own home - the Portobello Public Art House - when we take over the premises last occupied by the Tides Inn pub at the bottom of Kings Road. This will be the base for the Garden Gallery and the Imagine Porty Prom projects and a launch pad for the future development of Big Things on the Beach. We look forward to inviting you to our 'lift off' party later in the year.
