Watch out Brighton Place - Google about...

Post by wangi » 28 Jan 2011, 23:23

Google Maps have finally updated their data for the old roundabout at the end of Portobello High St / Harry Lauder Rd / Portobello Rd / Kings Rd / Seafield... However they've made a balls-up such that it shows you cannot go Portobello High St to Seafield, or up HLR, or Portobello Rd etc...

As a result of this a load of route calculations will take people via Brighton Place and Duddingston Rd or Duddingston Park.

Ultimate data source is Tele Atlas I understand - they are a subsidiary of Tom Tom and used as the map data on TomTom GPS devices and others...

So... expect the extra vehicles on those cobbles...

(did look for a quick "report error" link but found none, and have much better things to worry about right now! ;))

Well spotted.

Google Maps suggested I could turn left from Porty High Street onto Sir Harry Lauder Road, so offered up a route from PHS to Seafield that had me turn left on SHLR then do a U-turn* at the industrial estate. Coming down SHLR to get onto PHS it has you throw a U-turn outside the King's Balti.

* I was, of course, disappointed that the directions did not have me "keep right on to the end of the road".

I got round to trying to use Tele Atlas's "Map Insight" to report / fix the problem... But it's pretty ghastly to use for this class of problem.

So, fell back to firing an email to Google's "Geospatial Technologist" Ed Parsons as a plea for help (I follow his blog). He replied back asking for more info - so hopefully a fix is in the pipeline.
