Pedal on Parliament: a mass ride on Holyrood
Gather at the Meadows on April 28th (2pm for a 3pm start)
Pedal on Parliament will be gathering cyclists from across the nation to cycle on Holyrood to tell our politicians that cycling matters, to show our need for safer cycling and cities fit for people. Please join us and help make a Scotland fit for cycling!
In February, up to 2000 cyclists gathered in London to cycle on the Westminster Parliament in support of safer cycling and cities fit for people. On April 28th, to coincide with a follow-up ride in London, Pedal on Parliament will be gathering cyclists from across the nation to cycle on Holyrood. We’re asking everyone who cycles in Scotland – or who would like to cycle, or would like their families to cycle, but who doesn’t feel safe – to join us for a big ride of our own – and a big picnic. Young and old, keen commuter or weekend pedaller, fit or not – you don’t even need to be on a bike. You just need to show up and add your voice to help make Scotland safe for cycling.
...
Anyone interested in taking part in this, and setting off from Portobello? Without thinking about it too much I was toying with meeting at the Joppa end of Prom (Esplanade Terrace shelter) 1pm; leaving 1:30pm and cycling to Meadows via the Innocent Cycle Path. A nice ride for the family.
Anyone fancy it?

I would definitely be up for that Wangi and I could maybe bring one or two more as well. I will have to check my work rota before I commit but will get back to you.

Count me in and I will see if I can persuade PoP Junior to come along too. Could you confirm on Friday whether it is to be a 1.00pm or !.30pm meet?

Well, that went very well! What are you hoping to see from all this? I'd love to see separate cycle paths along London Road, so that you could get from Porty to Edinburgh without being alongside cars. The same could be done to other major routes like Leith Walk, the Costorphine Road, Clerk Street etc. I was in Copenhagen last year and it was amazing to see that almost every street had pavement, cycle path, and road.

My vision is to have a smooth cycle path ring road round the whole of Edinburgh, incorporating flyovers (that can be cycled over) and much of the existing pathways developed where appropriate so there is also plenty of room for walkers. I would then create about 6-10 cycle ways from various point on the cycle ring road that lead directly into town. These cycle ways must be delineated from the motorists with kerbing, much like they do in cities like Seville for example. Probably cost bewteen £50-£70 million max - a drop in the ocean of the UK's road budget. Build it they will come. Simples.
