Live Aid DVD..... What were you doing?

Post by CatzVP » 04 Nov 2004, 21:58

I just noticed for reference that the Live Aid DVD was being released on Monday, worldwide...

Can you remember what you were doing on July 13th 1985????

I do! I'd had my hair permed  and then we went out for a meal to a restaurant in Leith with the outlaws and watched most of it on a pub telly!

And, as I recall, my hair sort of resembled Leo Sayer's :D

The long awaited DVD set has significant omissions, I believe. And not just the miserable peoplel who wouldn't let their sets be shown for "artistic" reasons.

July 13th, 1985, was it not?
I was watching it. All day. I never moved from the TV except to pee and brew up. I thought it was fantastic, all except Madonna's terrible singing. And I loved her - she just couldn't sing. Freddie M was fab. George Michael was too - I had a major fixation with Wham! at the time.

I didn't need to be doing anything else, I was 12. Yet another cat out of the bag!
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

Your Right Bellybabe

Live Aid was 16 hours long.... :D
The DVD is 10 hours long.... :(

Why they couldn’t release it in its entirety is beyond me......But 10 hours is better than Zip

Plus I just bought 'Queen at Wembley'....so that will patch up the Extra Time!!!!

Was that released on VHS many, many years ago? My brother had Live in Rio and another one which I thought was Wembley. That was when I realised, aged...erm...not much, that FM was one of the greatest showmen ever. Maybe it wasn't Wembley though...not sure. Of course it had to be a long time ago because it's quite some time since he died.

Queen at Wembley was on VHS Bellybabe, actually both Rio and Wembley, both were great... Queen at their best, Yellow jacket and white vest stage, (so must have been around the time of Live Aid) it was a be-ugger to find on DVD though!! Freddie died 13 years ago this month

I was unfortunately working. I had just started my final year of nurse training and was working at the Royal Edinburgh. Started at 7am and went to a friends house after my shift to watch the rest on TV.

I spent the day atop interior scaffolding helping to paint a high ceiling at my parent's house  , but saw a bit in the pub later.

I can remember I had a far superior musical experience by ignoring Live Aid and going to see a band called The Men They Couldn't Hang at the Leadmill in Sheffield.

What were you doing at the Leadmill? Are you not from round here, or were you studying there, or...?
(Just being nosy and very slightly homesick...)

Hey

never seen em, but got the records. Might have to dig them out once I get the wires on the system found!

My memory is that one record would do though as they are all 'similar'? (sort of trad plus Billy Bragg with tune )

Bellybabe - I was living in Nottingham at the time but visited my sister in Sheffield frequently. Leadmill was brilliant. I saw so many top bands there - Bragg, The Redskins, Housemartins, Misty in Roots. And it played superb music on Friday nights. Happy days.

Mr Magnolia - TMTCH were kind of slightly less manic Pogues but they had one song called Ironmasters which I still play. But I know what you mean by a little going a long way.

Live Aid for me was, sorry rather boring, a day lying on the sofa in front of the telly - great though :D

The men they couldn't hang were one of my favs but Live Aid - just had to watch it - hope you donated money Gedge even if you didn't like the music.

btw the Pogues are nothing like "the men" , Pogues much superior.

Watched it all in my pals house in Bow, East London. The event was repeated around 1990 & I was lucky enough to video it, haven't watched it in donkey's though.

Other than watching the Celts win the European Cup in Lisbon, Live Aid was THE great day of telly and music - saw it all from start to finish - blown away by the event, and Sir Bob's swearing and cajoling was excellent- loved it all - brilliant!

Live Aid DVD

Post by CatzVP » 17 Nov 2004, 05:11

Just played Disk 1 and it looks good so far.... it explains why there is only 10 hours as opposed to the original 16.... it says that a lot of footage has been damaged or lost over the 20 years and this DVD set is actually a whole load of footage spliced together...(so far I’ve seen no joins!) .... so far its worth the price!!

We were travelling back by car from a holiday in Wales and listened to it all the way - It was brilliant and certainly made the journey pass quickly. The 'kids' still remember it too.

Spooky - I was also travelling back from a holiday in Wales, stuck in traffic as I recall.
Spooky and odd - I'm now moving to the same part of the Wales all these years later!

Richard, firstly, thanks for the contact details for Porty Grants, it worked a treat.
Secondly, spooky and odd? That should fit in perfectly, down in Wales. Sport a pair of white socks and no-one will know you haven't lived there all your life.

Especially the price I will be paying for it with the new toy I've recently acquired and some masterclasses from person who shall remain nameless.
