Anyone know the date of the Portobello Christmas Lights switch on?

I suspect that Anrdrew, the Town Hall caretaker is probably the person to speak to regarding this. If I can find him today I'll give you an update.

As far as we're concerned they're on...the house on Bath Street that always has the spectacular tree in front of the window is already brightening up our dull November days...! But it will be nice for the kids to see the actual town ones too, especially if they can be there to see them switched on..

Is there some sort of ceremony?

Prior to Portobello, I lived in the South Side and the South Side Association had a ceremony with the local councillor and "celeb" to switch on the lights at a carol singing service followed by a wee party afterwards for the association/comm. council and local school kids who had been singing.
It would be nice if that could be replicated here.

Bellybabe, saw the tree last night its lovely but way too early. Though saying that I was at my first Christmas night out last Thursday complete with turkey and disco and party hats.... and the hangover the following Friday morning...I will never learn.

There were no plans for an 'official' switch-on, but at this evening's CC AGM, and after several glasses of wine, the subject was discussed (several hours after the meeting had finished) and um, watch this space....

Ah...Memories.....

Are the lights as I remember them, colourful, Christmassy and only lit on the top half of the tree??

Any excuse to get in touch with Gail, eh Bob!

Or maybe we could get "Joanna" in a big pink dress to do the honours

Last year we all went up to the Bruntsfield 'switch on' as per usual and SANTA FAILED TO TURN UP!

There were lots of tired and emotional children around....

lets hope gails made of sterner stuff, Bob!

So...never mind watching this space, Portobello's Christmas lights were on at 3.30pm today!

What! No pomp and ceremony? You'll have to pack the frock away then 'Joanna'
Remember when St Phillip's were fundraising for their new roof and Santa lead a torchlight procession. That was fun! Could PCATS not try something similar? Maybe a bit late though..... :(

Drat and bother! Foiled again. Never mind, there's always next year and I've still got Gail pencilled in to do the honours at the big BONG! early next year. Failing that we'll just have to project Joanna's bum onto the Town Hall.

I really don't think the Town Hall would be big enough. PHS maybe?

Can I just say how fab it is that 'joy' started a Christmas lights thread?

In the greater magnolian tribal house the Christmas tree and the decos and stuff went up on Christmas Eve and not a moment before, and then came down on 12th night (arguments every year about when 12th 'night' actually is notwithstanding). If I had my way it would perhaps always be thus in this branch hutch of the magnolian family, but its a bit tricky when Blue Peter, the Tweenies, CBeebies, Art Attack, Newsround and the ads keep telling folk that Christmas is HERE! NOW! NOW!

Grant Stotts column in the Evening 'News' talked about the unwritten rule of radio being that Christmas songs were not played until 12 day before Christmas. Which is fine until you begin to worry that people might think that IS the 12 days of Christmas...

Oh Boo, it ain't the same nowadays, is it?

Wasn't there some kind of winter cavalcade in Porty last year? Or am I hallucinating? I seem to remember wanting to go to it, and getting home too late from work .....

If she's been reading this board she may have decided that she'd done enough turning on in Porty

I saw the Christmas tree in Port's office window on Friday night. Just wanted to say how nice it looked. I think your purple balls are lovely, Porty.

Just off out for my Sunday stroll - think I'll take a walk along to check out Sizzlers (now I know where it is) and of course at the same time have a look at Porty's purple balls

Sorry, PoP, forgot you were partners in crime your balls are lovely too.

And the twinkly lights almost cheered me up as I waited for the 7am bus to work on Sunday.
