Movies worth watching

Post by DG » 08 Dec 2004, 22:08

Just watched a film called 'The Mother'. Has anyone else seen it? Well worth watching. Confronts lots of tabu issues, very well acted and subtly done. Not for children. It's based around the story of a middle age/elderly woman recently bereaved who starts having an affair with her daughters boyfriend.

Any other films worth watching?

"My life without me" (Dir Isabel Coixet) was an excellent film - I'd hoped to catch it at the cinema but failed, but was pleasantly surprised to find it in Global. It's about a young mother who finds out she doesn't have long to live, so not for a night you want something mindless, but it was deeply moving and brilliant. And on a very, very different note, we absolutely loved "Connie and Carla" which had us laughing all the way through. Both out on DVD/vid because we never seem to get to the cinema these days!
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

Baraka

used to come around regularly to the Filmhouse but disapeared a few years ago. Its far and away the film I have seen most often at a cinema. (if that makes sense?)

Fantastic soundtrack, dunno if its available on Video/DVD, but I think it would be a bit lost on a normal telly. If you have one of those home cinema things I would think you could give yourself a real Christmas present.

A real treat at any time of year!

Saw Baraka a while ago - it is amazing. Manages to take you on a journey through life, cultures, beauty and tragedy all at the same time and without words - definately worth watching.

I too am looking forward to seeing the incredibles. And 'Robots' next year - coming out in March. An animated film by the makers of 'Ice Age'. Looks good.

BB, not heard of these films but I'll look out for them.

Other half and son and heir went to see "The Incredibles". Both thought it was fantastic.
(There were more adults than kids in the audience.)

Would love to see "Bad Santa". Heard great things about it.

Not seen at the movies but those nice guys at telewest have given Ali and I TCM (Turner Classic Movies) free for the next month so last Saturday instead of joining the Pol Xmas do I curled up on the sofa and watched Bette Davis in Dark Victory - hugely overacted and cheesy, I cried buckets.
This was followed by my favourite Humphrey Bogart movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Fantastic stuff.
To round off the evening they showed Blazing Saddles.
How good a days viewing was all that?

For all you film buffs, there's a new game called "Scene It"

Seems to be a bit like spot the intro but using DVD's to show scenes from films

Alternative to charades with granny on Christmas Day :!:

Ali noticed that this film is being shown on TV over the Christmas hols (9.00pm, Mon. 27th Dec. on BBC2).
I remember reading very good things about it when it came out so will be sure to watch it.

I was not allowed to watch it yesterday but have been promised that we can watch it tomorrow night instead. Again, on DVD. And it's showing all week at the Cameo, too.

This one sounds like my cup-of-tea :) so will be tuning in to BBC2 tonight, looking foward to it :) Not sure if my other half will like it though 8-[ still he'll probably be sound asleep on the sofa by 9pm anyway, as usual (that's on the odd occasion he is in of an evening)

We saw Finding Neverland recently. I really liked it - quite different to what I'd expected.

Has anyone else seen Polar Express? I fancied seeing it but I'm now hearing mixed reviews. We got cinema vouchers for Christmas and plan to use them this week. Any suggestions?

Oh...what about Lemony Snicket's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'? Has anyone seen this and is it worth seeing?

Not seen the film but I got the first Lemony snickett story tape from the library for eldest... I think he didn't like it much but I'm not sure if he was too young for it.

Just caught up with this conversation...

Baraka was withdrawn from the Filmhouse's schedules because the 70mm print was quite badly worn. Good movie though.

I've just discovered (having owned the thing for over a year!) that my DVD player will play American DVDs! A whole new world opens up! I'm a fan of old musicals, and there are so many that have never been released over here. 42nd Street, Alexander's Ragtime Band, Swing Time...

I think I've just discovered a little slice of movie heaven.
I don't believe in Beatles.

What a heavy film that was, DG. I disliked everyone in it apart from the dear old Dad who popped off early on. Very well acted, as you say but hard going.
Unfortunately, I recommended it to my 80 year old mum and 84 year old aunt thinking it was going to be a tad more romantic and gentle.
I bitterly regretted it when it got so explicit.

Mum watched it right through though so she couldn't have found it too alarming.

Oops! :? Sorry, ecm. I did say it's not for children but should have been more explicit. It does challenge lots of boundaries though.

The Incredibles and Finding Neverland are suitable for all :D

We saw the Manchurian Candidate yesterday. I found this a heavy going film but very good with some really scarey concepts. Made me think of Jacobs Ladder - quite an old film now I suppose.

Still undecided about seeing Polar Express.

I saw some of it this afternoon. The bits I missed were spent in the foyer with the magnoliettes, 'cos it was a bit too scary.

If you've read the (picture) book you will, like me, wonder how it could be padded out into a 98 minute film. The answer is that there is a huge amount of added stuff that makes it more of a 'monsters inc.' type thing than a soft cuddly one. The magnoliettes love monsters inc and Shrek, Nemo, etc but I think the fact that the adventures and dangers are very human and recognisable makes it a deal more scary.

The graphics are fantastic though - think of a digitised 'Snowman' on speed to get the feel of them. If you like trains it's a cracker!

I would give it my very own mixed review then DG, with the mix edging towards a lower rather than a higher mark. The magnoliettes pals' dad thought it was superb though and he saw all of it as his wee ones are a bit older and managed to cope by hiding under his arms. The 9 yr old cousins thought it was fab but a bit scary in places.

So, that doesn't help you at all!

I really liked the film, particularly the time it was taking to finish the conservatory, made me feel better.

I did a little bit if resaerch on Anne Reid who played the Mother. She was 68 when she made that movie, which is a year younger than my mum. I really hope I never find my mum blowin a carpenter in her conservatory even if it is christmas.

Did anyone watch Topsy Turvy last night? I loved that one. Did Broadbent get an Oscar for it?
