Tsunami Aid

Post by nicky » 04 Jan 2005, 13:32

Does anyone know of any locally organised relief aid going to the disaster affected areas in terms of clothing etc? We have given a monetary donation but also have clothing (esp children's) and sheets which could be sent. We had a clear out this week. Normally some would go to the local charity shops and the bin.

Like everyoneI am horrified by what I've seen from the comfort and safety of my home and want to do what I can to help.

Many thanks

Nicky

Nicky, I am unaware of any organised donations services in Portobello - it's a great idea.

I'm lost for words as to what has happened, and yes, watching it from the comfort of our homes..

I would also be interested in any donation services that anyone knows of.

Sorry Nicky, can't help on this one. For anyone wishing to make a monetary donation Findlays the Butchers (re-opens Thursday) is organising a collection, or you can donate online - more details below:

Every supermarket seems to be collecting too Bob. Asda, Sainsbury's and Marks & Spencer all had facilities at the checkouts for shoppers to donate money.
I suspect cash is what is needed most Nicky. All I've read in the papers and on the internet (Oxfam's site, for example) suggests clothing donations are too expensive to sort and to transport.
Again locally, the Lanna Thai in Musselburgh are collecting monetary donations and are having a charity night on the 11 January.

Marya, I was unaware of the Lanna Thai event but I have just booked a table for four for 6pm next Tuesday. It's a very generous offer by the owners and I love eating there anyway so it's a great excuse to enjoy a meal out.

Would anyone like to join us?

You can also make monetory donations through the Abbey building society. I'm sure other banks and building societies are doing the same.

Its sad Gemini, but photos like this go round the net like wildfire after tragedies...I got ones sent to me allegedly taken from the top of the World Trade Centre with an American Airline aircraft in the background.... claiming the camera was found in the rubble and was taken by a tourist seconds before the plane hit…(Another sick fake) The Tsunami maximum height was 16 to 20 feet...
End of the day though…it was still devastating :(
