"The Denver Post newspaper reported on Friday that the girls had decided to stay home and bake the cookies rather than go to a dance where there might be cursing and drinking."
My, my. Think of the cookies I could have been baking over the last 30 years or so if I had only followed these young ladies example.
I'm taking a bag of double chocolate cookie mix with me to Wales in a few weeks time. That ought to put an end to my cursing and drinking.

(How will I cure the karaoke and dancing, Gingerbread?)

I agree Glasga, all countries on our side were helpful and extremely brave during WWII...But unfortunately a majority of yanks are taught that, they won the war all by themselves and no one else was involved, it looks as if you visited either the west or east coast, because most in the Jesus states in between, think they are the centre of the universe.
And as for the supplying of weapons, The US have always helped us out there, for cash.
War is always good for business.

Re: eemmmmm yeah
Catz, honey, you disappoint me. The implication of that statement is that there were no brave people on the opposite side, and I find that hard to believe... Not everybody who fought against the allies in the war was in it because they believed in nazism etc. Equally, I don't think many people could consider the bombing of Dresden brave on our part - or the decision to NOT do anything about Auschwitz Berkenau.CatzVP wrote: all countries on our side were helpful and extremely brave during WWII...
Just a thought.
Now don't do it again.

I wouldn't have thought for a minute that anybody would have read that into what Catz said.

Are you by any chance quoting a Rule of Acquisition there, Catz?CatzVP wrote:War is always good for business.

Yet another "only in America" news item
"US politicians fed up with catching an eyeful of underwear want to fine those who won't hitch up their trousers.
The Virginia state house has voted to outlaw the trend of wearing trousers so low that underwear hangs over the top.
Delegates said the habit, popular across the US and in other Western countries, was "coarsening" society.
But others hit back, urging legislators to remember their own "fashion follies" and saying the law would be used mostly against black people.
The house adopted the "droopy drawers" bill by a margin of 60-34."

The good that can come out of the USA

Glasga were not picking on you guys in particular... many good things have come out of the US (the light bulb, sewing machine and artificial heart to name a few)...Just some stuff that seems really weird to the UK has also come out of the US.
The solar panels would be a good addition to power and has been tried successfully in the summer.... unfortunately the 6 hours of daylight in the winter and high rate of overcast skies, mean it will never be self sufficient (I would love to see solar power more mainstream worldwide, but until costs come down...or the Scotland develops more winter daytime hours, its not cost effective)
Time to get a solar mirror!
Strangely I saw a program on TV similar to the chip fat fuel story, which was a wonderful idea until It mentioned that if even 50 people in one reasonable sized town of 1/2 million had this technology (1/1000th of a percent of the population) and drove an average distance every day...there would be a massive used vegetable oil shortage.... so if you do get one...DONT TELL ANYONE!!

And to help some people out 1 cup = 225 ml or 8 oz
Obviously an American Frap!! but still delicious!
I tried it tonight!........Well recommended....nice one Glasga!

You have obviously forgotten the good old Scottish sense of humour.
You have taken a few trivial threads and got your poor wee self all worked up.
I think you'll find you haven't annoyed us all you have given us a good laugh.
I think you are long overdue a visit home to restore it.(sense of humour)
Cheers mate

Yeah, chill Glasga ned. We don't hate all Americans and we are growing quite fond of Canadians. You weren't 'kellascat' as well were you? I must start paying more attention to these IP addresses.
I think you will find that a warm welcome awaits you in the Figgate Whins. Failing that, try the Pop Inn.

GN maybe you should get yirself one of them kits and wire it up to your solar panels, keep a close eye on it, mind.Glasga ned wrote:Also fed up with high petrol costs ever heard of biodiesel if you have a diesel car you gan make this stuff out of old vegetable oil from mcdonalds say they would give it to you for free cause they have to get rid of it and methanol it is better for your engine and burns 75% cleaner than petrolium diesel there is a guy selling a kit for it on the net for $3000 us takes up 25 square feet of space so you could keep it in a shed and make really dirt cheap fuel thats if you could bring yourselve to deal with a yank
Seriously, you've made me laugh. I don't think anyone here even feintly dislikes Americans never mind hate. However, it would be remiss of us to overlook the totlally radge stuff some of them do. Having said that, your attempt at portraying Yanks as environmentally friendly is way off the mark. In fact its bonkers, factually and intelectually barren.
I have never been to Canada, other than to touch down in Toronto. I hear, from a number of differing sources, that Canadians are thick as mince, any truth in that?
Bit like Australians I imagine, I can't think of a single useful thing that either country has invented.

and Porty, Australia invented......
The bionic ear, a device that enables some deaf children to hear.
Flexible wine casks... the bag in the box.
The boomerang. Ancient weapon of the aboriginies. Other cultures have throwing sticks but none came back to the thrower if it missed the target.
The Notepad. In the whole history of paper, it had been sold and used in single sheets until in 1902 JA Birchall thought it would be a good idea to stack a pile of half sheets together, back it with cardboard and glue one end.
Making the world's first notepad.
The Electric Drill was the invention of Arthur James Arnot, who patented it in 1889.
Postage stamps. The world's first pre paid postage system was introduced at Sydney in 1838.
The world's first refrigeration plant was an Australian invention of 1858.
The worlds first bathing beauty contest was held in Australia in 1920.
The famous "black box" flight recorder for recording aeroplane movements was invented in Australia in 1958.
Also in 1958 the worlds first regular 'round the world' airline service was begun.
The inflatable aircraft escape slide, which becomes a raft if the aeroplane ditches in water was an Australian invention of 1965.
The Automatic letter sorting machine - 1930
Two stroke lawn mower.
The rotary hoist washing line.
Lithium as a treatment for manic depression.
Latex gloves 1945
The underwater torpedo, Louis Brennan 1874
The tank (1912 - Lance de Mole)
Paper machine gun belt - dramatically reduced gun jamming while firing.
The greeting "G'Day Cobba" and lastly.... Crocodile Dundee

Sorry I'm late. Some WW2 trivia for you.
1. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) there were U.S. oil tankers on route to supply the Republican government - as soon as Franco's coup broke out they were re-routed to fascist ports. This continued throughout the conflict, so when Hitler came on board for Franco, the Stuka were not only flying with US fuel, but their bombs were manufactured in, er, the US. Is this US bashing? I can get company and ship names if you like.
2. Companies like ITT pretty much didn't blink at WW2. To the extent that Canadian ITT workers who were drafted into the Canuck air force used to deliberately miss their targets over the Reich (again, I can supply details)! Depending on who was in occupation governed who ran the factory (for example, an ITT factory in France had managers respectively from the Gestapo and the Resistance depending on the date) but the profits were channelled out through Switzerland. Once the war was over, companies would start claiming back for any of their property which was damaged by pesky soldiers passing one way or t'other.
War, huh?
