Seals

Post by Richard » 11 Jun 2004, 12:11

Did anyone else see the seal just off the beach yesterday evening - that is only the second I've seen in the few years I've lived on the Prom.

More seals required - could anyone arrange for a few dolphins - even a porpoise would suffice!

No, but we did see 15 ships all at once, which was cool. They looked like naval ships - on their way back from the D-Day celebrations?

I think it's more likey they were sheltering from the storm... Caught that on camera:

but you can't really make them out on the low-res version!

The closest I've ever seen a seal from the shore is at Yellowcraigs.

We spent a wonderful hour watching a seal play in the water just near the leisure centre about a year ago(?) - he had what looked to be a huge skate or similar flatfish and was tucking in.

And that's what makes Porty special.

The best time to see seals is on a really calm day, early in the morning. On quite a few occasions the founder members of the Portobello Dog Walking Society (now partially disbanded due to untimely deaths  ) walking along early in the Summer months have seen several seals. It's funny because they seem to be watching you as much as you're watching them and sort of follow you. Anyone else remember the basking shark being washed up along at King's Road many years ago?

Epykat, are you one of that famous Portobello Institute, the Dog Ladies, AKA the Dog Maffia? Or is there more than one august band of PDWers?

I was only ever a fringe member due to work commitments! Now, very sadly I am no longer anything since my best friend recently had a stroke and had to be put to sleep  (some of them can be a bit like the mafia though but then again there are a lot of dog haters around!)

Sorry to hear that. My dog had to be put to sleep last summer and I was devastated. I think the rest of Portobello was secretly relieved - he had a wanderlust second to none and managed to win a fight started by a pitbull terrier that was off-lead while my dog was on the lead... And whenever he escaped and we phoned the police station asking if they had him, they'd ask for a description and as soon as we started, they'd say "Oh, it's Rascal again, isn't it?" I was invited for a drink with the dog ladiesd once and they asked if had one, and I said "You've probably seen him around!" and gave a description, and they immediately said, in ominous tones, "Oh yes, we know THAT dog..."

So...nobody else misses him, but i do. My sympathies.

Thanks for that and thanks to anybody else on here who I might know who've been really nice to me and not mentioned it until they've guaged how likely it is that I'll make a total fool of myself! So, if you see some plonker walking the streets trying to look like she's going somewhere but isn't really - that'll be me
