Another Promotion Opportunity is Born

Post by Porty » 02 Jun 2005, 14:10

Congrats to Tommy Sheridan and Mrs S on the birth ot their lovely new promotional and point scoring opportunity.

A liitle rebel has been born and the tenacious liitle darling let her mum know right from the start who is boss. "Too smart to suffer" Mum wanted 31st May to be the day (Dada, was there a notable Socialist born on this day or maybe an important anniversary?) but Gabby thought otherwise. "I'm going to be born naturally" thought the pre-infant." "Dad will be proud of me, although I guess he won't be telling anyone as he values his family's privacy."

Rebel Rebel my nappy's a mess. Here was me thinking that childbirth was a natural process.

I wonder what the rebel is planning next? Staying up all night screaming when George Bush is in the country? Maybe an appearance in a Standard Life TV Ad? Oh, surley not, that would be shameful commercial activity.

I'm no fan of the suntanned socialist, either Porty but I don't remember you being slow off the mark when your last "baby" was about to be born.

I know and I can't see how you arrive at that conclusion from what I said. But I guess that's the risk when offering up one's family for a media opportunity.

Maybe the cynic in me is being uncharitable to Tommy, he must be delighted with the baby, they both look cute. I just don't like the spin.

Dad caught shagging = Giving up leadership to look after family (Which doesn't happen to be here yet)

Mother elects for caesarian on a specific date, nature intervenes = baby's a rebel.

Indoctrination commence!!

Of course she is!!! Its not me that's claiming she is a rebel.
You can see it in Years to come. "And even the day after you were born, Dad told the whole world you were a rebel. erm we will just skip over the bit about it being a fabrication"

Jack did and he publicly admitted it. Loads of people have illicit shags and handle it a lot better than the man you and Dada effuse as Mr Integrity.

In terms of admission; contrast Jack with Tommy Charlattan: Tommy went on every news and politics show denying any personal issue or any party disenchantment. Meanwhile, not a single other SSMSP spoke up in support of him. He also threatened ony several occassions that he would sue the News of the Screws for lots and lots of money. In fact he was going straight from the studio to begin work on the case. Tommy: won't you sing a little louder over there?

It wouldn't have been appropriate for the whole sordid affair to be aired after his promotion to FM!

Loads of people have illicit *** and handle it a lot better than the man you and Dada effuse as Mr Integrity.

Like 'jumping Jack' exposed his wife and family to the tittering gossip of the whole world knowing he was a Cheat.

You obviously have inside information? Tommy has denied it - no one has proved it - I rest my case.

In terms of admission; contrast Jack with Tommy Charlattan: Tommy went on every news and politics show denying any personal issue or any party disenchantment.

So he was telling the truth then?

Meanwhile, not a single other SSMSP spoke up in support of him.

Perhaps they didn't need too - They know him much better than you and I, he is, I'm sure - more than capable of handling any inferences to his personal life without involving other's.

He also threatened ony several occassions that he would sue the News of the Screws for lots and lots of money.

If the News of the Screw's had anything on him - do you honestly believe that they would not have used it? Get real.

In fact he was going straight from the studio to begin work on the case.

You have this information on Good authority I take it?

Tommy: won't you sing a little louder over there?

Can't be heard for the rantings of McC.

It was younger member of the SSP. I believe she was from Aberdeen. News of the Screws did allegorise, Tommy didn't sue. He was the one that said, live on TV several times that he was going straight from the studio to begin the case. (I remember thinking it was a bit strange, given that he claimed he was going to spend more time with the boss). I have been waiting on the case to begin every since. Don't forget that the Press love Tommy C.

I can't remember the exact content of the the press conference when Foxy, Kaney et al, the 5 SSPMSP's were seated and being interviewed about Tommy's decisioon to rescind the leadership. However, they were stoney faced, reluctant to praise and did not offer a shred of support to Tommy C. To me, and I accept its only my view, they had a dark secret but loyalty to the SSP and probably to their own well beings prevented them from spiting it out. Dont you recall the widespread bafflement at the sudden resignation

You are spot on about Jack's reason for spilling, he was thinking longer term about being FM. Tommy should have just come clean, however I suspect it was made more difficult a) because TSTS was pregnant b) Affairs are far less acceptable among working classes in comparison to middle classes.

Incidentally, how do you feel about the statement "Too Smart to Suffer"? Should I be looking at Mrs Porty and thinking "Dumb enough to deliver"?

It's personal choice, I opted for an Epidural, which was extremely painful.
Labour lasted 20 hours In the end my son was delivered by c section.
I opted for a pain free labour - but circumstances dictated the actual birth.

Gemini, you are answering a question about delivery methodology. I am asking one about the statement (I am) "Too smart to suffer".

I think the statement is derogatory (to those that chose natural) and also show an ignorance about the much longer recovery time, physical pain and physical restriction that come with C section.

Ooops -

I am not in favour of c-sections on demand by the mother to be, c-sections should only be carried out when absolutley necessary. Mrs. Sheridan's statement was silly, and, probably will cause offence to other women.

To be fair to Mrs S she was trying to avoid the tag "Too posh to push". She admitted after her 'too smart to suffer' retort that she was quite frankly plain scared of childbirth. I'm not going to condemn her for that Porty.

There are lots of interesting issues here, but they are perhaps in danger of being overshadowed by the perpetual chess game of our respective personal prejudices. Porty is as guilty of this for New Labour as I am for the SSP.

If the SSP as a whole are guilty of anything, it's of acting exactly the same as the rest of the herd of political types, for example if Brown & Blair are allowed to have their Granita moment and deny it happened (or just not divulge what was said) then everyone else gets to do it too - or if a member of the press during the election campaign asks Gordon Brown if he would have acted the same way over Iraq as Blair did, and answers "yes", then even though everyone knows he said it because he had to, not because it is necessarily true, he can get away with it, due to some unwritten rule or other.

There are two aspects to Porty's attack. One is a bit of throwaway knee-jerk bias which is wasting our time and insulting our intelligence, the other is a much more intelligent commentary on spin and the difference between what is said in the press by politicians and what is actually going on.

I will always address politics, but the personal only when it directly impinges on a political debate. I've never once started to talk about any aspects of Blair's personal life - my criticism of him mainly centres around
philosophical betrayal and the use of cluster bomblets on children.

Some personal aspects of the Sheridan debate have to be talked about, but some are gutter journalism of the News Of The World level which are *oh so* easy to fabricate and more complicated to disprove, but failure to litigate seems to equate guilt in Porty's eyes - or maybe not - but anyway the damage is done.

In my mind there is no objective difference between the sophisticated attempts by more syllabic journals to smear (like the Galloway stuff) and the rubbish aimed at Sheridan - what interests me much more is the reaction - do you (a) : realise that the establishment have been slinging muck at people who represent any sort of threat, small or large, for a very long time; or do you (b) express righteous indignation that politicians who you disagree with should conduct themselves in a manner exactly the same as the politicians you support, but don't criticise because they are batting for your team?

Porty judges Galloway and Sheridan with a completely different wig than the one he dons for his establishment chums, which is a shame. It's almost making me start to understand what it must be like to be a young black male in London.

It's also sad becuse it means that we waste our time on rubbish when we could be talking about the issues that the charismatic tanned leftists undoubtedly stand for.

I know plenty about the executive meeting that saw Tommy "resign" to "spend more time with his family", but for as long as Porty is more interested in the contents of this or that politicians' underwear instead of their heads, for as long as he uses different yardsticks for different flavours of politician and for as long as he allows himself to be manipulated by media playground tales I will find somebody/something else to talk to/about.

Dada, what a fantastic post!!! I feel suitably humbled.

I don't agree entirely with the following statement.
Dadaist wrote: Porty judges Galloway and Sheridan with a completely different wig than the one he dons for his establishment chums, which is a shame. It's almost making me start to understand what it must be like to be a young black male in London.
I am sceptical of all politicians, regardless of their hue or persuasion and for me the higher the profile the deeper my sceptiscim gets. This is probably due to the fact in order to get anywhere in Politics these days one has to lie and spin. (In Bliar's case; lying and spin to keep him up there.)

My issue with the SSP has got more to do with the core of their beliefs. Socialism is not an efficient economic system, it doesn't work. There is no evidence that it works,in fact quite the contrary.

I find Tommy S a charismatic person and I think i could quite happily go for a pint with him or maybe to Starbucks where we could argue over the best seat for observing eye candy. My problems with him begins when I see or read his spraff about economics, what he says, more often than not, is nonsense. It sounds good to the economically ignorant but in practice its unrealstic and unworkable.

An inverted exanple of this is the fact that he (and the others) donate half their salaries back to the SSP. Whilst this appears to be a grand gesture, and it is, it is also an economic neccessity. The SSP are a £100,000 business (Pure guess for illustrative purpose) with staff costs of £200,000+ they cannot afford the infrastructure to support 6 MSP's. It is long-term unrealistic that Tommy et al could take all of their salaries and keep them. Having siad that then if you are going to "donate" half of your salary you may as well make the most political capital you can. In reality its just another spin.

He continually plays and panders to the "populist" ignorance of his disciples, a master of sound bites, hence the "rebel" statement. For many, including the journo's it was a masterstroke, turning negative comments on his wife to a positive one on the baby. (I dont like the fact that he is using the baby tho)

I remain deeply sceptical of the guy as you are of Blair. I even wonder that when he is arrested during protests, he only just turned up 5 minutes beforehand for the photoshoot/TV. Am I too cynical?

You go on to say;

"I will always address politics, but the personal only when it directly impinges on a political debate. I've never once started to talk about any aspects of Blair's personal life - "

Blair keeps his private life private, so you don't really have the opportunity. (Not that I'm suggesting you would)

But I have even more of a problem with the core of SSP beliefs in that I'm not even a Marxist! There is so much more to this, you seem to constantly trot out (geddit) the same line about economics and use that as an excuse to chuck out the baby with the bathwater.

Some time we can play capitalism vs "socialism" (whatever that is) ping pong but on a different thread. Right now I have to get back to work (for the NHS, oops sorry socialism doesn't work does it) to pay my national insurance and income tax (oops socialism again, this is terrible)....

Remove "socialists" and insert "politicians" then answer the question yourself.

Unless you meant it as a cheap rhetorical joke, in which case oh my god my sides are splitting like that was sooo funny you should be like a comedian I'm so impressed like did you make that up yourself wow.
