Haven't been able to access the site since this morning. Anyone (Wangi?) know what the problem was?

Yeah... It went dead about half nine or so but only the forum. I had a hunt round and found what was wrong but couldn't do anything here to fix it...

So emailed the hosting company to get them to correct it.

In the meantime at 5 I sent a fair bit of time putting together a frig that got the forum back up and running under another address and updated the link on the main site page to point there (still does). Of course when I got home it was back working at the normal location and I had an reply to my email...

For a bit of a chuckle folks i'll include the geek-speak:

I am sorry, It’s my fault..

I had another ‘script kiddy’ get into the server over the holiday, and I was looking for it. I found a copy of the file from April

And I did not notice the date until later. So I move the folder and I put it back when I found the old date. But I missed that when I did.. I am still looking for the problem.. Except for a few cat naps I have been looking for it sense 3AM this morning.

Again I am sorry, It was an error on my part by not looking at the date in the log file..

Hi Don, we're having a bit of trouble with our phpBB on porty.org.uk this morning. It was working earlier in the morning but then stopped and any attempts to load http://porty.org.uk/phpBB2/ or a page under that results in Apache spitting out a 403 error.

I've checked the account via FTP and the directory entry for phpBB2 is wrong - it is owned by root and not accessible. Can you revert this to the correct userid and permissions please (might need to be recursive).

Do you have any idea how this would have happened? We are/were running the latest version of phpBB 2.0.16.

Thanks/L

I've managed to FTP to the site and check the permissions on the "phpBB2" directory:

drwxr-xr-x 9 2010 2010 4096 Jul 29 2004 pg
dr--r--r-- 11 0 0 4096 Jun 29 15:41 phpBB2
drwxrwxrwx 2 2010 2010 4096 Aug 08 2004 picture

Those permissions don't let anyone access that directory apart from the hosting company... And I cannot fix it:

lftp portyweb7049@ftp.porty.org.uk:/www> chmod 777 phpBB2
chmod: Access failed: 550 SITE CHMOD command failed. (phpBB2)
lftp portyweb7049@ftp.porty.org.uk:/www> chmod a+x phpBB2
chmod: Access failed: 550 SITE CHMOD command failed. (phpBB2)

So, question is how did it get like that and do you want me to liase with Don Peek to try and fix it?

Two further problems:

A/ My avatar has disappeared?
B/ I tried uploading a new one (gif and jpg) and got the following:

Ed, your avatar back in a jiffy... Problem was the backup I made last week (when updating to phpBB 2.0.16) was only partial - I didn't include the avatars or smilies directories... When I made the frig this afternoon I used a copy of these directories from a few months back...

I'll I need to do is tell phpBB it's back to using "phpBB2" in the path...

...And that would have been it if you hadn't tried to reupload it ;) Try again!
