Off to The Blue Bean

Post by Porty » 24 Jul 2004, 13:14

Time for Saturday Lunch. Ive been giong to the BBC a lot more recently as Im now working close by. I have learned not to ask for Americano as its like dishwater, ask for Cafe Creme instead. Also watch out for them bringing Soup and Sandwiches/Nachos at the same time, especially when you are sitting at one of the tiny outside tables. Its likeoneof those plate spinning circus acts.

Hi Porty

I have not been to BBC for an age, my partner wants to go for the cinamon and chocolate panini with cream, sounds lovely and very fattening.....

Ouch. I didn't even know the toy box had been abolished. I think I always knew the thing about prams (it is quite wee in there) but the rest of what you describe is inexcusable.

Write a letter?

Whoa, slow down. Kitcheners has never had a toy box and the only reason the staff dont frown on people bringing kids in is they never notice customers until they have sat being ignored for the statuatory 5 to 10 minutes. In reality both places are on the small side for prams or buggies.

My tactic for Kitcheners is to play the daft laddie and just walk up and give my order, pretending I don't know it's table service. 9 times out of 10 they just take the order. The other 1 time they say "if you just take a seat" etc

One of the problems of table service is that one customer looks very much like another, and it's easy to mistake an irate new customer sitting at a table with dirty dishes on it for the original occupant sitting with his/her original dishes.

It's also easy to get it wrong as to whether it's counter service or not, so I solve all of these problems by wearing an enormous daft grin and staring at the staff until they serve me.

Thats not the only problem. Table service gets in the way of back shop preparation of mini-quiche and noodle wraps. I love to watch a queue of totally bewildered prospective customers looking at each other to see if anyone knows what going on? Then they ask for a Ham Salad Italian Roll and WOOSH before you know it the sales assistant is nipping over to the fruit shop or Scotmid for ingredients.

Today Mrs Dadaist and myself took a lovely stroll and bought a couple of BBC lattes (well - one white coffee and one Latte)

We had a mild altercation with Mr Bean as Mrs Dadaist had simply asked for a Latte and had received a half-full cup of mostly espresso. Mr Dadaist was duly sent back to the shop, and the following conversation ensued :

(D - Dadaist. M - BBC Manager)

D - "Is there any chance of some more hot milk in this baby?"

M - "In this what?"

D - "Cup. Is there any chance of some more hot milk in this cup."

M - "She should have asked for a large latte. Thats a regular latte but in a large cup."

D - "Ah. Can I get some more hot milk in it then please?"

M - "So you want a large latte ?"

D - "No, just some more hot milk"

M - "You see, the problem was that she should have asked for a large. That's a regular."

D - "Is there any way, either through use of language or money that I can get some more hot milk please ?"

M - "Yeah sure. (pours milk) The problem was ... etc ...."

D - "I find myself caught between a Wife and a Manager"

M - "The problem was .... etc ....."

D - "Life has some philosophically unanswerable questions."

M - "There's no charge. Seeing as it's you"

PS as the long-suffering Mrs Dadaist, I feel I must explain the latte issue

being a fussy sort, if there's loads of espresso in my latte I need it to be well-diluted with milk (as I don't like strong coffee)

so next time I shall ask for a half-dose of espresso (or rather that''s what Dadaist will be told to ask for lol)

Not sure that it was worth the effort, but that's your 2 threads amalgamated, although in a somewhat unsatisfactorily disjointed manner. As I have noted previously, there doesn't appear to be a neat and tidy way of moving posts between threads, although threads can easily be moved between forums.

Anway, this is not nearly as interesting as the fact that Beach Babe, after all this time, is now claiming to be Mrs Dadaist! Shock, horror! I shall now have to re-read all of her 18 posts to date, in the light of this new information.

In the long-running soap opera that this forum is fast becoming, this is surely the sort of astonishing revelation that precedes the familiar closing theme tune.

Can't wait for the next episode!

Yes, we've had a couple of chuckles over the years.

We assumed that you knew because we're on the same IP - or are we? Maybe one of our browsers has a proxy and the other doesn't, but I assumed that Internet Connection Sharing would always present the same IP to the outside world....

Of course you'll wind me up online. Why would your online persona differ from how you treat me in real life anyway?

Disjointed is where Dadaist is at, so it suits him perfectly. He is one of the few people I 'know' that starts off at a Tangent.

Post by nicky » 26 Jul 2004, 08:13

Congrats to BeachBabe and Dadaist! Beautiful baby!

But...on the subject of lattes...

I may be mistaken but...a medium drink usually comes in a medium cup...filled to the top. A large drink usually comes in a large cup...filled to the top. Ergo...no room for confusion.

Bit like half pints and full pints of lager...both favourites of mine :-)

I've never been into the Blue Bean Cafe as I've been loathe to give my business to someone who has been taken to an industrial tribunal for sacking someone who is off sick. But I must admit it does look like a nice place to sit and have a coffee on a sunny day. Can anyone tell me if I can now go there with a clear conscience? Is it the same owner as in 2002 or even if it is, has he changed his ways?

My son and I enjoy going to the cafe at the indoor pool. It's lovely to sit near the window and look out over the beach, especially on a sunny day, although there's so much more that could be done to make it a more pleasant place. The coffee there is surprisingly good, always piping hot and cheap compared to the BBC.
Unfortunately, the food doesn't look that inspiring and all the cakes and biccies are pre-packed.
Does anyone else remember some years back when the cafe was run by a couple of women, one of whom was local? The food was superb and the home baking ruined all attempts at burning off the calories in the pool!

As far as I know its still the same people who own it!

The woman also runs the Clothes Shop at the top of Bellfield Street - Maybe just me - but the majority of the stuff is overpriced and normally could do with a good ironing.

Although to give them their due - I was told that they did rescue one of their Old English Sheepdogs from Spain, which was kind.
