Do you live on Portobello High Street?

Post by Lou » 31 May 2004, 13:16

Of the 83% of people wishing for the Bell to be restored, how many of you will actually be able to hear it's every chime!!

I don't live on Portobello High Street but I am hoping that I will nevertheless still be able to hear the clock chime over the sound of the traffic. Like many people of course I am at work during the day and so my opportunities to enjoy it will be restricted to evenings and weekends.

I am very concerned at the amount of through traffic using Portobello High Street and the noise pollution this creates. By comparison, I think the rich mellow sound of a 19th century bell will be positively charming.

I'm one of the 83% and I don't live on the High Street, but I do live *very* close to the police station and will be able to hear it all the time, more especially as i work from home. And i can't wait. And as i've said before, it's amazing how quickly you gt accustomed to regular noise like clock chimes and trains passing so that you barely register them. I think it will be lovely.

Thanks for the concern of noise polution casued by the traffic on Portobello High Street, now you want to add to this by having a clock chime whenever! It might sound mellow to you Bob from where you live but spare a thought or ten to the people on constatn night shift or the people with fatigue related illnessess that have to sleep at various times during the day.

It won't toll 'whenever' Lou, just on the hour during the period it is operational. I do appreciate that not everyone is enamoured with the idea but I don't think it will be as bad (or as loud) as you imagine.

The online poll, this thread and the article in the Reporter are all part of the consultation process. Nothing has been decided yet and it certainly isn't my decision to make anyway. Everyone's views will be taken into account, but I guess in the end we have to take a democratic decision based on the feedback we get.

Some of the church bells, on the other hand, seem to go on forever. And isn't it the case that they are often just taped recordings nowadays?

I think I've said this somewhere before on here so forgive me for repeating myself - but the bells on the Old Parish in Bellfield Street just drone on and on and on from 10am every Sunday, and they are singly the most tuneless things ever  I certainly hope they are taped otherwise somebody needs an urgent lesson in bellringing  I'm looking forward to the clock chiming. We have a chiming clock in the house and I love it and the maximum amount of chimes is 12 Lou - not that many to put up with!

Can someone claify is the bell going to chime once on the hour or as other people I have spoken to, a chime for every hour on the hour? Or hasn't anyone thought of that yet?

I believe the bell is up and ringing but I've not managed to hear it yet. Apparently it's quite quiet so hopefully it's not disturbing Lou too much!

Da Bells....da bells

Post by Zargonian » 18 Jul 2005, 08:30

I live on the High Street and I'd love to hear the bells.
It would also help drown out my dreadfull geetar sessions, and the usual gaggle of numpties staggering and muttering to themselves along the
High Street. :P

It would also be usefull for my trying to play AC/DC's Hells Bells!

Noticed the bells for the first time while waiting for the bus this morning. Subtle, discreet, charming (but then I live a reasonable distance away)

Sorry I havn't been on for a while but yes I agree with Gedge, they are subtle, discreet, charming but not at 7 in the morning especially when they chime the wrong time.

Lou - a few people have pointed out that the bell is chiming one hour ahead of the time. I've just spoken to the clockmaker and he is on his way to sort it.

I'll bring it up at the Community Council meeting. It would cost around £50 to re-program so if members are in agreement we might be able to delay the start time to 8am?

BTW it was also two minutes early at seven am today.

Saves you missing the bus.

The clockmaker tells me that the chimes aren't programmed to start until 8am anyway. Lou?

It's a bit much, this "wrong time chime". It used to be you could ask policeman the time. Nowadays, you can't rely on a police station to tell the time!!

It starts at seven. Or in fact, two minutes to seven. Has done for quite some time.
