For those of you who were not at last weekend's "Imagine Portobello" event, here is information about a bid that is being put together for lottery funding to build a new pier for Portobello.
Re-aPier – The Forth's Gateway to the Sea
An idea for the Big Lottery Living Landmarks project
This proposal is put forward by the community of Portobello on the shore of the City of Edinburgh with partners still to be agreeed.
The proposal will address the need for the sustainable development of the Forth Estuary Coastal Region – the Firth of Forth; for a recasting of the relationship between the people of Edinburgh and their coastal environment; and for the regeneration of the sea side economy of Portobello.
.The proposal envisages the development of a substantial structure, (working title ‘Re-aPier') located in a high profile position off the shoreline of Portobello, Edinburgh's beach and linked to the shore by a walkway or pier. Together with the existing, on shore urban landscape, this structure will constitute a new ‘gateway' between Edinburgh and its coastal and marine environment. Re-aPier is intended as a catalyst for other developments that we hope will see the gateway linked to the city by a combination of an urban walkway and a ‘corridor' of artistic elements that delineate the 3k route from the city to the shore.
Re-aPier will house:
Scientific and development agencies concerned with the sustainable development (social, economic and environmental) of the Firth of Forth.
Educational activities enabling virtual access for the public to an interactive experience of the underwater world of the Firth of Forth, its history, geology, fauna and flora etc. with an emphasis on its interconnectedness with other marine environments and living systems.
An embarkation point for tours of the Firth and journeys to other coastal settlements and attractions.
Artistic elements, including gallery and performance spaces, celebrating the inter relationships of the marine, coastal and urban environments of the Firth of Forth, together with their diverse human populations.
Tourist services in the form of a visitor centre for the township of Portobello and its beach, incorporating a local museum and a range of provisions designed to encourage and support people to explore the coastal and marine environment of Scotland.
Informal recreational opportunities in the form of walkways and social spaces.
Catering and retailing provision.
Re-aPier will use cutting edge marine engineering and design technologies to create a sustainable ‘man made island' or ‘end of pier' presence (crannog?) in a site that is clearly visible and attractive from the main transport route from the city and along the coast of much of the Firth of Forth. 'The design will seek to have minimal impact on the environment in the use of resources both in terms of the construction phase and the ongoing operation of the facility. The structure will become a new signifier of the City of Edinburgh that can be seen by visitors who arrive or leave by air, train or sea.
We believe that the proposal will be welcomed by the township of Portobello because:
It offers increased economic potential through a redefining of the relationship between the township and the City of Edinburgh.
It creates opportunity for aspects of the proposal, such as hotel and catering services, to be developed as social enterprises to benefit local people.
It enables the community to have a significant influence on the impending development of the western end of the township and to link the developments by the means of an urban walkway.
It enables the community to develop its character as a focus for artistic and creative activity.
It will provide the community with an asset that it can steward for the wider benefit of the community.
We believe that the proposal will be welcomed by the City of Edinburgh because:
It contributes to the long term rebranding of Edinburgh as a Waterfront City
It enables Edinburgh to capitalise on its underused asset of a city beach
It contributes to the city's profile as a model for sustainable development and demonstrates the vitality of its communities.
We believe that the proposal will be welcomed by the wider Forth Estuary Coastal Region because:
It will serve as a regional hub for social, economic and environmental development.
It will increase visitor and resident awareness of the value of the coastal and marine environment
It will provide a model of excellence as a partnership approach to regional development.
We intend to put an application to the Big Lottery Fund in January 2006. If we are successful at this stage , we will receive up to £250,000.00 for public consultation, technical development and the development of an appropriate management structure. If the second stage of the development work is successful, we could access between £10M and £25M to make our ideas a reality.

The concept of a new pier is visionary and highly commendable, but the proposal itself has to be the most pretentious composition I have ever read. Pretentious moi? Ok, so we have poked fun at the idea but the intent to do something to re-vitalise Portobello is nothing short of commendable.
There is of course very serious side to all of this, namely who is behind the project and what mandate do they have.?
