Porty/Joppa Boundaries

According to the map below, Portobello ends at the end (or beginning) of the prom.Now in all my years in Portobello, I've always thought the daisy park was the official boundary between these two fine neebors...have i been living a lie all this time?

Franck - that's a Conservation Area so does not really mean much vis a vis what is Portobello itself. Also, I think the Daisy Park boundary is a church parish boundary. According to really old maps Portobello included much of what is now considered to be Joppa and the gap between the two was nearer Morton Street. These things change over the years through administration/size/ etc etc. It's a conspiracy to confuse and confound!!

I always thought Portobello ended at Kidds the chemist, as it then Becomes abercorn Terrace? or would that just be the high street.

That's true re High Street at Kidds but old deeds for John Street etc say those houses are in Portobello. Plots thickens!!

My head says Abercorn Park too... with John St Ln being split down the middle. Anyway, as I understand it in ye olde days when Porty was still a separate burgh/town Joppa was considered a suburb of Portobello:

Hmmm... my head says weird things thou when I label the photos I upload... The beach ones are either "Portobello Beach, Portobello, Edinburgh" or "Portobello Beach, Joppa, Edinburgh"

Every area in Edinburgh has vague as hell boundaries anyway, unless you go with the arbitrary council ones which make up area names! I mean Milton, eh?

If the High Street ends at Kidds the Chemist, I say Portobello its self ends at Brunstane Road/North. as it becomes Joppa road thereon!

, Kings road is the start of porty at the other end IMO.

I have been told that Joppa starts at our side of Bellfield Street (odd numbers) and the other side is Portobello. Certainly when it comes to voting the other side of the street (untill the last election) went to the Town Hall and our side go to St Phillips. I can't remember who told me this but they seemed to know what they were talking about at the time.

We've voted at St Phillips since moving here, but Marlborough St is definitely Portobello and not Joppa.....so don't think where the Polling Station is can be taken as a reliable indication of Portobello/Joppa

Interesting that you vote at St Phillips when my friend who lives on the other side of the street has always gone to the Town Hall

I think that it was someone from Portobello Amenity Society that the boundry info came from. I prefer to claim that I live in Portobello anyway so it doesn't bother me.

I've always considered Joppa to start at Morton Street. For those in Bellfield Street it's just wishful thinking

St Philips, Joppa, Parish boundary is the fountain in the Daisy park.

So I've always said that East of that is Joppa, West of it is Porty!!

Just checked out the earlier thread on this subject and Rathbone verifies what I thought, that it is Bellfield Street and he always knows what he is talking about so I'm sticking with him

But don't feel too flattered, Rathers, that's from someone who blathers about "phantom heads" on a thread about WAYLTATM?

Anyway, what if one is not CofS, where's the boundary then, eh???
