Portyborn Portypeople

Post by Jay » 11 Aug 2004, 16:30

After talking about all the nonogenarians in Porty, I was wondering how many of us were

a.) born here
b.) born in Edinburgh
c.) born in the Lothians
d.) born in the Borders
e.) born south of the Highland Line (and north of the Border)
f.) born north of the Highland Line
g.) born south of the Border (to which I was strongly tempted to add a subset 'born south of the Border but north of *****'!) :?

It's just my family history/local history side coming out!

What's next - deportation?

C'mon - lets be welcoming and not differentiate between those who came recently and decided to stay, and those who crawled, amoeba-like, out of the Figgie Burn.

Born in Carlisle but consider myself a world citizen or earthling perhaps, without wishing to be unwelcoming to inhabitants of other planets.

Whoa, whoa, whoa .........

I said it was my family history/local history side coming out. It was - I thought - a perfectly harmless speculation

I certainly meant no offence.

I am sorry offence has been taken. I will withdraw completely from the field.

Jay, I should warn you that Dadaist is fond of exaggeration for comic effect. Sometimes the nuances of humour and meaning get a little lost in hyperspace. I'm sure he didn't take offence at your post, nor intend to cause you offence.

Dadaist - gently with the newbies please!

I didn't (take offence), nor do I (intend any).

Jay - just try and read my posts as if they were written by someone who, in my mother-in-law's own words, is "a bit saft"......

Well, I am, but only with the added subset  ! Think I'll change signature to reflect.

Actually (wasn't sure if this was part of this thread or not but didn't want to start a new one), After my earlier reply i got to mulling this over. Bellybabe family is a member of Portobello International Babysitting Circle, and it was there that i realised what a very small world it is - or rather, how the whole world ends up in portobello. First we found a member who went to the same school as other half. Then one who went to my rival college. Then one who went to my college. Then his wife, who taught in my college around the time I was there. That's pretty weird.

Marya - yeah tell me about it. Student flats. And the lesson?

If you are head reprobate of a gang of ne'er do wells for a number of years, pay your council tax. And if you don't, make sure it's not you that the council find or you'll have to pay several years worth for a property in Merchiston with all the various wasters you used to live with long gone.....

I should have Scott & Company on speed dial.

I came to Portobello when I was two and my sister was 11 but my Mum was brought up here and my Nana lived in Bath Street for years and years and years. Much as I would love to say I crawled amoebalike from the Figgate Burn (if only to make Dadaist feel better), I think we actually used a removal van.

Born at Elsie's, grew up Meadowbank and then lived in various locations in the east side of Edinburgh before moving to Portobello. I'd like to think I might always stay here or hereabouts from now on.

:D Sorry I got a bit 'het-up' over Dadaist's first post. It was the word 'deportation' which turned my screws.

Me, I'm also Category G, subset - another Northern lass - there - I've admitted my sex, too! (In fact, if you look at the football thread you could even guess my home town!) I also grew up by the sea, which is why I headed straight for Joppa and Portobello when I first came to Edinburgh. Ten months in Joppa, and nine years in Porty. I had to move out of my wonderful building on Bath Street at the weekend, but I made sure I stayed in Porty and within sight of the sea!

Being a family/local history type, I was very interested to see how many people, in the 21st. century, were living in the place they were born in - or near to it. Thanks for all the replies! :blob2:

Jay, anyone can create a poll - but you have to do it at the beginning, when you are creating a new thread (topic). Another one for the FAQ I guess.

Actually, I SHOULD have put in a category between f and g - born in the Islands (we won't get into whether Northern or Western!) - f(ii) - my aplogies to any Islanders.

Born in Nairn (of Edinburgh parents) not a miracle just that my father was building an airfield near Nairn towards the end of the war. Returned to Tollcross then Fairmilehead followed by Joppa. A short stint in Leith Street (student flat), Haddington, then to Marchmont. 6 years in Eastern Europe (Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Poland). A long stay in the West Midlands near Solihull (22 years) returning to Portobello 5 years ago.

Wow, haven't people moved around a lot? Mine's much shorter than that - Glossop for 19 years, Sheffield for seven with a break in the middle for six months in Ecuador and six in northern spain, and Porty for almost five.

How boring does that sound?! :sad5:

Well, I suppose that year wasn't boring, but one year out of...however many <grin>.
Come on, I mean, I bet hardly anyone here has ever heard of glossop. Apart form maybe having read it in the Meaning of Liff.
