Was in Ottakars today and found and bought a book of aerial photos of Old Edinburgh (1930) including 6 of Portobello. I think one may include Rathbone House - several are of the brick and bottle works. Fascinating stuff. Only £7.50!!

("Old Edinburgh - views from above" pub. by Stenlake Publishing - same series as the books of Old Portobello postcards that's be out for several years)

I've had a look at this book somewhere before. It's very good.

Fifty oblique aerial views of Edinburgh, photographed in August 1930, probably for Edinburgh Corporation. These are taken from a collection of glass slides found in Lothian Regional Councils offices in 1987. This is a useful 'snapshot' showing the use of various sites in Edinburgh about 70 years ago

If I remember rightly, it took a fair amount of detective work to determine when the piccies were taken?

Yup. It was through looking at what buildings were built/not built inc the demolition of Calton Jail and the start of Corporation Houses somewhere. Also the dates of the footie and cricket seasons!

Incredible the number of tall chimneys everywhere, a colleague pointed out. And all the railway lines. And so few cars!!!!!!!!

I would be most interested to see your book Poppy as my house is built on the site of Rathbone House, will catch up with you later :D
