I was at the post office part of Scotmid with my son and we took some passport photos and queued up to give in the application. Whilst we were slowly progressing through the enormous queue we got chatting to a couple of old ladies sitting on the bench. They wanted to see my son's photo and commented on what a bonnie boy he is. They satrted laughing and joking with each other at all the hearts he will break when he is older.
Now later on that day I thought about this, as I've heard this expression many times before. I thought that there are probably few harder things to go through than managing a broken heart. I remember my Great Aunt who was single, she died a few years ago in her 80's. She had her heart broken when she was in her 20's and never really recovered. I thought about a very old girlfriend who I adored, who for some strange reason thought life would be better without me, that took a measly eight years. First of all I thought isn't there a better expression, then I looked at my son and, remembering my old girlfriend, thought you'd better not!
