I had to go for an Xray today to the Leith Clinic.

I have a question ...

How come the Xray operative gets to wear a lead apron AND go behind a protective screen ... yet I get exposed to the full whack of RADIATION???

And is it alpha, beta or delta radiation? Gamma?? Heck I don't wanna turn into the Hulk!!! What the hell have I been exposed to?? Have I been sterilised?? Neutered??

And how come I have to wait a full ten days before I get the results too. What ... am I in the prehistoric 1960s???

Can anyone answer my questions? Really, I mean ... no stupid answers ...... Porty! I really want to know!

They have to work with and near it all day.

Fear not, Cleopas, the X-rays shouldn't do any harm in low doses. You will not be sterilised by them, Dont Panic.
(Mr Soupy had many x rays when younger and still went on to father 4.)

The X-ray technician would get a sort of cumulative dose every time they worked so that's why they hide, to lower their continual exposure. If they covered you in lead it would kind of defeat the purpose of the excercise1 If you were a parent in with a child they'd give you an apron while you held kiddies hand.

X-rays aren't like alpha or beta radiation which are streams of paticles but are a form of electro magnetic waves futher up the spectrum than ultra violet.

The bit I dont have an answer to is the wait for the results. The technician will have taken the X-ray, which will be shown to Radiologist, who will write a report, which will be sent out to who ever asked for it, who will then have to read it, who will then tell you. In these days of computer technology it should technically be able to be done much quicker but hey, at least it's still "free"

Maybe the next time you visit you should ask them. Not outright you understand, as they may be offended, try asking in in a round-about way. Do you think that will work?

Don't know where you got the idea that you will have to wait 10 days for your result

I can assure you, as one of the Secretaries from Leith CTC X-ray Dept, that the reports are very often sent out on the same day the patient has been x-rayed, if not they are definitely sent out to GP's within 2 days - we are very efficient

Just recently patients x-ray results have been made available on-line for GPs to access, though this is not quite up and running smoothly yet - hopefully it won't be long

It was actually my doctor who sent me to the open access Xray unit at Leith CTC who said 10 days. Therefore my next appointment with him is Friday 15th. I just thought, maybe that was enough time for the radiation to soak right into my body, so I would not contaminate anyone else when I go to his surgery. I'll assume I was wrong about that too.

You're sure I won't kinda "Hulk" out one day??? I must admit I do panic at medical things. I had Bell's Palsy two years ago and I was given a course of hormone pills. I was terrified I was going to grow breasts ... and the only men who want THOSE are the straight ones!!! No ... let's not go there!

Here, I might've seen you and we unconsciously "spladooshed" each other ... or does that only happen in Porty??

I got sent to Leith CTC re stones in kidneys

I was to get x ray and scan got the x ray still waiting for scan that was 3 months ago.

I had to wait 2 weeks for results

I'd forgotten. I got sent to the dental hospital for Xrays to my neck and the radiologist told me the results and there , mind you I'd already had Xrays at Eastern General but it wasn't refined enough for the area and the dental hospital had this wonderful 360 degree thingy,we all knew there was something in my neck.
Nearly hugged him when he said " it's stones".

The most galling bit of visits to any of those places are the signs that say "324 people failed to show for their appointments last month" . It makes me mad, even allowing for those that may have been too ill to phone.

Don't worry I'm sure you will be fine, we have hundreds of people in every week for x-rays - never heard of anyone "hulking" out yet

Not too sure about the spladooshing though I think it can happen anywhere

Sorry to hear that Izzie - I must have been off on holiday that week

Seriously though, if you are still waiting for a scan result after 3 months then there is obviously a problem, perhaps its gone missing - you should contact your GP and ask him/her to phone/ write and try find out exactly what has happened.

I have just found out where my results went to

I was at the western today to see a consultant,and there in front of him were the said results.I now have to go and get a renogram I think that is what he said.

Seems I have been nuked to many times and this has done alot of damage.It also seems I might be able to glow in the dark

If your result was sent to the Western Izzie then, if it was your GP who referred you to Leith, he must have asked for a copy of your result to be sent to the Consultant, we do this quite regularly.

btw ... I got MY results from my hand Xrays which started this thread. Rheumatoid Arthritis!!

After he told me, my doctor (at Durham Road) said, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

I said "Like what?"

He said "Like that!"

I replied, "Cos only OLD people get that!!!!!"

Apparently not. Anyone can get it at any age!

Suffice to say I'm not happy about it ...

There does seem to be a lot of it about, Mr R!

I don't know much about the condition ... and doctors only tell you what they think you'll understand, assuming that we won't understand medical terminology. I think I'm going to do some research on it over the course of the week.

I have it in both hands and forearms and it's spreading to my knees and ankles if the doc reads my "twinges" right. I have trouble gripping things and even the computer mouse takes its toll after an hour or so.

I know some people might think I'm banging on about it, but I've always been fairly healthy and I'm trying to understand how I've got the condition now, especially when there's no history of it in my family. And as has been shown here in this thread, a number of us have it to some degree or know other people with it.

Anyone on the forum with direct knowledge of whatever form of arthritis could contribute to our understanding of the bloody thing ... please take a moment to share your thinking o or feelings on the subject. I'm not suggesting we form a club (I bet one exists already!) ... just share what we know ... like medication, how painful can I expect it to get (I'm such a coward), how you live/cope/deal with it.

Dissemination is an important part of understanding how our bodies work and, ultimately, begin to fail.

Yeah, you're right ... I am banging on a bit!

But any advice would be gratefully received.

I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis and have had for many years, even tho I am in my early 40's. It runs in my family and my mother and uncle have it bad as did my granny.

I have been on diclofenac anti inflamitory drugs for a while which certainly helps the inflamation and pain. I also take a drug called methotrexate which is a Disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug and slows down the spread of the disease. Prior to that I was on Sulfasalazine but this can cause damage to the liver if taken for too long a period.

Usually after a while you would need to go onto pain killers and I take a reasonably strong co-codimal.

Wow, you have my sympathy KR that is some heavy medicine. I take Doclofenac from time to time, in fact i took one today. I get gout very occasionally and one tablet workd wonders.

If you haven't been on it yet, and you or someone you know has some form of arthritis ... go on and have a look. I've ordered several booklets, so I can understand the condition better.

I can recommend acupuncture for the pain relief side of it. The NHS offer it, well, if you ask, but just for straightforward pain routes, not the full esoteric far eastern approach

You can have more than ordinary acupuncture needles - they also have electrified needles! Stabbed and shocked all in one
