I'm in the magic O- category too and used to give blood regularly to badge level until my BP started to do funny things and now they won't let me eitherGRANTY wrote:Don't worry, I'll take care of you all. I've got the magic 0- blood and give every 12 weeks. This has earned me all sorts of wee badges, a christmas tree bauble and an easter egg by way of thanks.

I wonder how many folks are turned away because of borderline iron levels?
I didn't even bother going along to the last couple of sessions that my work organised for the staff.
I'll certainly go along next time and just bully/shame them into letting me bleed for them.
oh, and since we're sharing blood groups, I'm AB rhesus positive D according to my card.

Both Epykittens are negative too, although one is A and one is 0. In the olden days it could cause serious problems for pregnancies but now in the event of your offspring being the opposite, you get your wee shot of anti-D and you're right as rain

I'm O neg too so is one of my daughters and the other is A neg
Its a sore one that anti D... right in the buttock/hip if I remember correctly...you also have to have it if you miscarry, just in case....ouch
Years ago, I used to go every 12 weeks at a time when they had a desperate need for rh neg donors for leukemia patients and because they only needed one part of the blood, the red cells I presume, they took it out and spun it thought a centrifugal (sp) force and gave you back the rest that they didn't need...fascinating

Or people could just nip into the donor centre up at Lauriston Place which is what I do.
Ive just been and got the times off the website where you can pop in;
Mon & Fri: 10am-4pm
Tues, Wed & Thurs: 12pm-7.30pm
Sat: 10am-1pm
The centre is very handy incase you arent free on the days they come to Porty.
