We should buy The Plough in Portobello to use as a clubhouse with the insurance money. 8)

Only £249K !!

Seriously it is a real shame about the club house. Lets hope that the insurance can cover a re build. However all the old photo's, ties and trophies can never be replaced.

So sorry to hear about your clubhouse, it must be heartbreaking!
Mr. Arachnid, being an ex fireman, knows just how bad it must be!
These vandals( or whatever other names one could call them) can't have any idea of how much work and how much sentiment is involved in something like that.
Bet if the shoe was on the other foot they'd feel differently!( or maybe they don't know what work or sentimet is!!)
Hope they get caught and made to pay for what they've done!
Why be scared????

That's terrible news. What a miserable waste of history and activity. Glad no-one was hurt, though I wouldn't be too sorry if I heard the vandal had suffered bad burns.

The photos of the wreckage make it look terrible. A sad day indeed - I still remember going on a sponsored walk to help raise funds to build it!

Really sad, especially for all those who put so much effort into the club :(

Yes POP I remember the sponsored walk well - that was about 30 years ago now wasn't it. Mr Lizzie and I were up at Duddingston this morning with Ed and quite a few club members were also there and I'm not ashamed to say a few tears were shed and not just by me :crybaby:
It is a very sad day for Porty Rugby Club, all our family are very upset as many others are. There was so many photos etc lost that can never be replaced. Its a blessing though that no one was hurt in the fire.
Lets hope something good can come out of this and we can rebuild an even bigger and better clubhouse :)
You had better start your training for the next sponsored walk
How old would you be, if you didn't know how old you are?

So - the latest I understand is :

1. your insurance will cover the re-build

2. the council have said yes to the lease/planning/thingy

3. you might get use of an extra bit / extension you wanted

4. the mighty Pete Twaddle is on a mission to get as much memorabilia as possible

5. the new clubhouse will have shutters throughout to prevent this happening again (but this isn't covered under the insurance)

Is that right? I know that a lot of stuff that can't be replaced has been lost, but it seems to me that this all could have been a lot worse.

When the clubhouse opened in 1977 I was just eighteen. It was an almighty struggle to get the funding together and the likes of Alex Currie, Ford Paterson, John Reid Duncan Clements and Ali Donald did an amazing job. Even then all of the members had to sign a £50 gurantee with the Bank so that inthe event that the Club went bust we would each have to fork out £50.
