Big Things On The Beach grant award

Post by Bob Jefferson » 24 Dec 2005, 16:39

An early Xmas pressie for BTOTB:
New Scottish Arts Council / National Lottery Grant for 2006-2007

The Scottish Arts Council/National Lottery has awarded Big Things on the Beach £47,828 over the next two years.

The money is to ‘develop the skills of local people to commission and manage public art projects in Portobello’, and will enable Big Things to employ a public arts development worker on a half time basis. The worker, who will be located in the Community Centre, will develop and coordinate a ‘training course’ and manage two (or more) public arts projects.

The course, which will run twice over the next two years will be open to up to forty local people who have an interest and are prepared to make the necessary commitment.

Big Things will provide more details about the course and how to participate in 2006 once the worker is in place.

That's great news. The stuff they do is quirky, but really in keeping with the environment. Still fond of my windsocks!

The socks are fab at giving weather info as well as cheery to look at!

8) Thank you Bob for getting the poster up on the website again. Big Things On The Beach have had a really good response to the course and almost half the places are already taken for the first stage.
This is a very exciting community initiative that uses public art as a tool to engage with a new audience and I am looking forward to putting all my course planning into action. I will keep you posted on our progress.

Exhibition of the Public Art Course 2006-2007

Just to let you know that there is now an exhibition of images and text about the Public Art Course up in the library. The exhibition has images and text from the Public Art Course 2006-07. It is the first of two courses being run by Big Things on the Beach. We are currently enrolling people for the second course which starts at the end of August.

There is also an exhibition of Raised Images taken from the Public Art Course up in the library as well. Course participants were asked to choose their favourite Public Art image taken on one of the course trips. These images were then translated into raised images by Rosita Mckenzie and Camilla Adams. Jim Mckenzie translated all the course information into Braille. The process of raising the image helps make the work accessible for people with visual impairments. Go along and try to see how it feels to read the images with your eyes closed. The exhibition will be up until Thursday 2nd August so please go along and have a look.

If you are interested in taking part on the new Public Art Course please contact me at this email address and I will send you the relevant course information. The course is FREE and places are limited and will be given on a first come first serve basis so don't delay!! You can also contact me at Portobello Community Centre on 0131 6698275 and leave a message.
Yours,

Caroline Muirhead
