I've not been there for 20 years and the one time i did go it was a rugby trip so can't really recall much.

i'm thinking about going for the weekend, sometime soon and wondered if anyone has any advise on where to go (or not go), where to stay and so on?

Oops wrong forum- my bad.

Haven't been for years either. We fly into Schiphol on 27 June but we are taking a train straight out again to Apeldoorn.

The Melkweg is worth checking out - every band under the sun has played there at some time. A boat tour of the canals is a must. Anne Frank's house? Amsterdam's alternative attractions are well documented and I'm sure will be of no interest to you.

My memory of my first visit is stepping off the train and immediately being hassled by people trying to sell us 'treeps man' or accommodation. And the traffic was mental - cars, buses, trams and bicycles all criss-crossing the road.

Well, if anyone goes, perhaps you might be kind enough to send me a postcard? I collect postcards, and I don't think I have any at all of Amsterdam! I haven't been there either (although I did live in Reykjavik for 6 years - which I believe is now a 'cool' destination - in many senses of the word!)

Only visited Amsterdam during a stop over, while en route to Canada, but the chips were nice and I bought a huge bunch of tulips to take to our friend. Caused no end of hassle with Canadian customs

Will it be a "cafe culture" weekend, or a romantic one? Either way, I can recommend a lovely place to rest your head.

When I was being all slushy and romantic, I stayed here:

www.synopsishotel.com

and when I was there with the girls on a different kind of holiday I went here:

or somewhere very similar with the same menu. I don't recall much else, except maybe for a pack of special playing cards and the three of spades sticking in my mind.......

I was there celebrating my 40th, three weeks ago - it's as seedy as ever!

The "coffee" was good as were the Argentinian steaks.

I stayed in Haarlemstraat, which was a great location, the hotel which I can't remember it's name ( strange that) was 90Euro's a night for a three bed room.

The room had a seperate loo and shower, and a TV.
But no power sockets (except for the one suppling the tv)

Barnies is a good eatery and has an great menu.
"So spin that wheel, cut that pack!
And roll those loaded dice
Bring on the dancing girls,
And put the champagne on ice"
