The End is Nigh, or is it?

Post by Bob Jefferson » 06 Sep 2008, 19:01

I refer of course to the little experiment planned at CERN next week, which may discover the elusive Higgs-Bosun (God) particle and ultimately explain life, the universe and everything.
Built 300ft beneath the French Swiss border, it will fire atomic particles around its 17 mile circumference, 11,245 times every second before smashing them headlong into each other.

The result will, for a split second, replicate the conditions that existed in the moments immediately after the birth of the universe, known as the Big Bang. In a space a billion times smaller than a speck of dust, the collisions will create temperatures 100,000 times hotter than the centre of the sun.
Or, as its critics suggest, it may create a black hole that will swallow the entire planet.
Opponents of the project had hoped to obtain an injunction from the European Court of Human Rights that would block the collider from being turned on at all, but the court rejected the application on Friday morning. However, the court will rule on allegations that the experiment violates the right to life under the European Convention of Human Rights.

Professor Otto Rössler, a German chemist at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen who is one of the most vocal opponents of the LHC and was one of the scientists who submitted the complaint to the court, said: "CERN itself has admitted that mini black holes could be created when the particles collide, but they don't consider this a risk.

"My own calculations have shown that it is quite plausible that these little black holes survive and will grow exponentially and eat the planet from the inside. I have been calling for CERN to hold a safety conference to prove my conclusions wrong but they have not been willing.

"We submitted this application to the European Court of Human Rights as we do not believe the scientists at CERN are taking all the precautions they should be in order to protect human life."

Professor Rössler claims that, in the worst case scenario, the earth could be sucked inside out within four years of a mini black hole forming.
So, is it time to max out the credit cards, tell your boss to stick his job and host an end of the world party? Or, like the millenium bug, is it going to be a damp squib?

Sucked inside out. What a way to go!

A point to bear in mind before you do something rash - I feel it's only fair to add that most scientists are of the opinion that the world won't in fact end on 10 September.

Here's the science

Nevertheless, I won't be paying any bills in the interim, just in case.

I personally think ( given the teachings of Douglas Adams ) if they get a wee black hole all the missing pens and odd socks in the universe will fall through.

And there will be a startled bosun looking for his boat.

If I'm wrong and the world does end I'll be mightily displeased that they didn't wait until after my holidays.
I'll sue.

Washing your windows when there is even the remotest chance of the world ending next Wednesday? Shouldn't you be seducing the postman or something?

I think they only start whizzing particles in one direction next week.

You'll have to hold your breath until they have whizzed some around in opposite directions at the same time (which is likely to happen at some other, later, (random?) point in time) to see if they have created hell on earth.

Could be a long wait!

No, it just means I can't clean my windows as intended (so I can see The End happening, you understand!!)...until later (if we are still here).

You should be OK Poppy
I think Edinburgh should be immune from any effects as Prof Higgs ( of particle fame ) lives here

I was more thinking that Andrew Marr's big luggs and gyrating arms at Cern would help keep the particles away!!!

My biggest worry was when Andrew Marr and the Welshman were talking this am and I heard a popping sound in the background.
The end of the world?
No, champagne corks!
