porty christmas lights

Post by sandra51 » 21 May 2009, 13:27

Does anyone agree with me that last years Christmas lights in Portobello High street were an absolute disgrace? Two very small trees on top of Town hall faintly lit with blue lights? No lights on the pavement tree's. There only seemed to be a few lamp post decorations of which many of the bulbs were gone and one at the corner of Brighton Place that only lit up on three nights to my knowledge.
Whats happened to the lights we had several years ago. All the tree's in front of the Bank, kitcheners etc., were covered in white fairy lights. The two trees on the top of the Town Hall were large enough to see from the ground and they had festive coloured lights on them. They were red or white but def. not blue!!
Can anyone tell me who is responsible for these lights, is it Edinburgh Council?

Yes.

Do you always start to think about Christmas in May, Sandra51?

Have to admit the half lit one on the lamp post did look a bit pathetic.
I prefer white lights myself Sandra51, but was happy enough with the blue ones.

You're right to start thinking about it now. My company installs Christmas lights, though not the Porty ones. We generally have to start installing in October, which means that maintenance of existing lights or building new ones has to start weeks before. Many councils have already issued tender documents for Christmas lights for this year and if you need to raise additional funding then you might need to wait until the next financial year i.e. Christmas 2010.

Last Christmas, I illuminated the gable end of a building in Bath Street with coloured light and projected rotating stars onto it for a bit of fun (I was off work for a fortnight and bored). It was quite effective. There are lots of similar walls in Porty due to the mix of architectural styles and the fact that our proximity to the sea leads to lots of ends of streets. I thought about maybe doing something similar this year but expanding onto some more buildings. We could maybe have a bit of a mid-winter lighting festival.

:D Thats what I like to hear. A bit of passion and originality. I just feel that Porty, as usual, gets a bum deal from the Edin. Council and it never showed more than with the Christmas lights last year. Not sure what to do about it though?

Looking promising for this year. Nice big tree appeared on the pavement outside the Bank of Scotland.

yeah, saw that on Friday early afternoon, think it took about 5 council workers to get it in place.
