Porty 'no show' for boxing day dip

Portobello Boxing Day charity swim cancelled as not a single soul signs up
Portobello beach was deserted on Boxing Day while CLIC Sargent dip at Prestwick (below) attracted hundreds of eager bathers

PORTOBELLO has developed a reputation for saying ‘no’. ‘No’ to new schools, ‘no’ to new supermarkets, ‘no’ to new homes.

Now the residents of Edinburgh’s Seaside have shunned a Boxing Day dip in the name of charity – en masse.

Clic Sargent had hoped its Dip in the Sea would have hundreds of locals blowing out the Christmas cobwebs with a bracing dip on Portobello Beach yesterday morning. But orgnaisers were shocked and disappointed when not a single person signed up for the quirky fundraiser and the festive dip was axed.
...
Maybe somebody should have told her there's already a Porty one on 1st Jan?

It's unfortunate... However for any event to be a success it needs to be promoted. The time for stories in the local press was before the event, so publicity could be drummed up, not after it was cancelled.

I was unaware of the event, and I'm sure everyone else was too. Nothing on the various sites online, nothing in shop windows, notice boards, Porty Reporter, ... etc.

But Portobello was just the venue, Edinburgh the target for participants - so it needed to be promoted even wider.

The assertion this was a result of Portbello's nimby fringe is a daft angle for the reporter to pursue. Nobody object to the event, everyone was just ignorant of it.

(and the Prom & Beach have been busy Boxing Day & today)

Its silly organising two simultaneous fund raising events in a small place like porty. The beach dip having to compete with PPAG taking a bath at their Boxing Day fundraiser was obvioulsy stretching a limited market.

Come on Epykat surely you know the old oft used local saying 'charity begins at.................... the boundary of Porty'

I read about this in the EEN 3 or 4 weeks ago and that was the only piece of promotion I'm aware of. what sticks in my craw is that it makes porty residents look like tightwads.

:D - absolutely! We don't want to be giving money away willy nilly to good causes  . I bet everybody sat there with their EEN thinking "stuff that.....who wants to swim in the horrible, grey, freezing cold sea for charity?"....wait a minute.....Adam's probably right then

First I'd heard about it
I'd have been right in there
Sitting next to the radiator ,sipping mulled wine, munching a mince pie and watching them all paddle in

Actually when I think about it there wasn't any notices up on the Prom about the event, like there are for Hogmanay, or even a mention on the local online forum, which I would have thought would be the obvious place to publicise such an event

We do have one or two "wild" swimmer who can often be seen taking a dip just in their costumes and some others regulars in their wet suits

They're all very pink coming out the water. Must be healthy, giving them such a glow

Hi Wangi - There was indeed a notice of BOXING DAY DIP FOR CHARITY under WHAT'S ON on the back page of the Winter Issue of The Portobello Reporter. See the online version.
