Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
Regardless of my own views on the current artwork I think Sarah Woodford should be praised for listening to the feedback from the community. I commend her for trying something different which I believe is welcome and necessary and think getting something that everyone buys into will be a thankless task. Communication and consultation up front may at least give a feel for how ideas will be received in the community.
Sarah - do you have a plan that you are working to and is this something that you can share with the community (sorry if I've missed this). Also aer there groups you are already working with from Portobello to help reinvigorate the high street?

Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
While I agree with much of the content of previous posts the whole situation seems to sum Porty up.
Great initiative - not quite right - empty windows.

Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
You are correct,
Sarah should definitely be commended for trying this out, and I hope she doesn't feel disheartened at the response to the subject matter (not the subject). I am hopeful that she will continue trying new things to enhance Portobello for everyone.
With regards to the pieces in question, I'm sure local artists would welcome a chance to have their work on display, but perhaps the amount of effort in coordinating this would be too great without understanding whether or not such an endeavour would even be noticed, at least we have an answer to that.
And art is freedom of expression and speech, it shows the artist's outlook and often is created to provoke an emotional response. Pieces are subjective, and whether you like or loathe a particular piece you shouldn't deny its right to exist or its right to be displayed/enjoyed/detested. In the same way that peoples' opinions on the art in question should be respected. There are plenty of pieces or art/architecture/people that offend my sensibilities, but they are what they are, it only encourages me to a) avoid them and b) spend time seeking out those things that I enjoy.
Also, I'd like to point out that I remember a number of school trips to art galleries where the men and women on display were wearing far less, and drinking far more.
Edit: if they are coming down I'd be happy to take ownership of one or two of them?

I would encourage any artist who wishes to have their work promoted locally and on other sites in Edinburgh, to please contact me directly.

I have 3 young kids, and they all thought the pictures were Bratz Dolls and assumed it was going to be a toy shop. There was nothing wrong with it in my eyes, great way to promote artists work. Does it have to be paintings of boats on the sea to make people happy?

Have I missed the many other shop fronts with art in them?
??...
Hot stuff in Porty
IT is easy to understand why some parents get hot under the collar about the amount of sexual images young people are bombarded with these days.
And one or two of the murals currently decorating empty shop units in Portobello High Street are a bit close to the knuckle. Those most revealing images should be removed.
But let the majority of them continue to brighten the drab shopfronts. After all, you'll find more bare flesh on the walls of the National Galleries and more explicit images on a Wonderbra billboard advert.

Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
That was my point also wangi. There is much worse on display on billboards. Its some nice bright art on what is a very drab part of the street. I do wonder why Sarah and others bother.
Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
I had mixed feelings on the art. I quite liked the style and the vividness, and I had some misgivings about the content. However, given that some people have very valid objections, I'd also like to congratulate Sarah for changing them so quickly!
Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
I'm really liking the replacements though!

Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
Any bare ankles on show?
Re: Acorn Pets Artwork
Two whole legs! But no stockings or suspenders that I could see. Sure you'll have a closer look though so let me know.
