Little known to the general public, Edinburgh in fact possess one of the world's best underground system - the Edinburgh Circular Railway It is currently an unelectrified goods line running out of Waverley Station and travels along the East Coast Main Line as far as the Baileyfield FreightLiner Terminal before branching out and returning towards the south of the city past Asda Shopping Centre and Cameron Toll Shopping Centre in turn. This line then passes Morningside where the old Morningside Station was before crossing the Glasgow Main Line near Slateford Station. It finally merges with the Glasgow via Polmont Line and back to Waverley via Haymarket. All it takes now to make a good underground is to re-open the stations en route and to re-built the derelict Waverley - Newhaven - Granton/Portobello railways. The duct underneath Edinburgh New Town for the Waverley - Newhaven section still exists, its site can be clearly seen in Waverley Station, but the other parts of the same railway had been turned into a cycle-path, which may prove difficult to reinstate. Edinburgh's new status as a real capital city may mean increased business and increased traffic, so there may well be a re-opening of the Circular Railway in the near future. The Edinburgh CRAG, Circular Rail Action Group, are already pressing for ScotRail to upgrade the line to a passenger line status and they have arranged various railtours along that line already. All the bridges and railway infrastructure along the Innocent Cycle Path still exist - from my observation of the infrastructure, I believe it was a double-track railway at one point. Even though the infrastructure may not be safe to carry today's heavy locomotives, it does prove that a Mass-Transit Railway System for Edinburgh is possible and it is my hope that any future system could co-exist with the cycle paths and be built before the roads in the city evolve to cope with the increased traffic.
