I'm with E on this - good thinking, batgirl!!ecm wrote:I vote for the Sheep Heid as we could just eat and drink there without the added complication of agreeing on and finding somewhere to go drinking after eating.
Never had a dinner there but had some lovely lunches and it's a nice friendly place.

What, eh, um, er..................come to think of it I hear the Sheep Heid is a dreadful place and all their food is made with mashed up sheep heid, even the puddings.
It's true, honest guv.!

Just spoken to 'Mr Sizzler' (sorry, forgot his name!) who says their menu will be up in a couple of weeks. We'll try and get details from the others (know Dalriada already have their's ready) and post details of them when available.Bob Jefferson wrote:Can we get some menus up on the site to help us decide? What's the food like at the Sheep's Heid nowadays?
Read some favourable comments on the 'Sheep Heid' recently (dated June/July so not too out of date) sheep heid
How about going somewhere that isn't doing a Christmas menu. Just go out for an "ordinary" meal and bring some crackers - I know how to enjoy myself!
I have voted for the Prince Balti although now I think about it I went last year and discovered they had put brussel sprouts in the veggie curry as a festive touch.

Say something once, why say it again?
When I have nothing to say my lips are sealed

And could I also add that if there are people out there who are thinking this is only for the "hardcore" POL people, I went along and "revealed myself" on Friday at the Dalriada and was made fantastically welcome, met lots of really nice people, drank far too much and enjoyed putting faces to online names.

Was very nice to meet you, both on Friday and enjoying the sun yesterday.Gedge wrote:And could I also add that if there are people out there who are thinking this is only for the "hardcore" POL people, I went along and "revealed myself" on Friday at the Dalriada and was made fantastically welcome, met lots of really nice people, drank far too much and enjoyed putting faces to online names.
Although its not on the poll, I believe the Foresters suggestion was a good one, where we approach them to hire the whole lounge. Get a restricted a la carte menu, which we organise so that we can pre-order. If we can avoid xmas menu's (either by booking privately or going in November) it will keep the price down. £30 quid a skull without drinks is over the top. Will we do a lunch rather than dinner, like we did in 2004?
I would prefer pre-xmas (some suggested post). I don't see it as a must that we have to be in porty but we have a number of options as yet untried. If the poll can't be undone, I'm going for the Sheepy.

I think I should mention here that it would have been mash not Smash, i.e made from real potatoes and very fashionable.Sandra wrote:I don't mind where it is decided that we go.
If its Forresters make sure the smash is off the menu - vile
(and it is impossible to please everyone)
However, one can ask for chips instead and in my experience they do lovely chips!!
Poppy I actually ate the stuff so I think I can decide for myself whether it was real creamy mashed potatoes or smash! And it definitely was smashPoppy wrote:I think I should mention here that it would have been mash not Smash, i.e made from real potatoes and very fashionable.Sandra wrote:I don't mind where it is decided that we go.

Sandra, please remember that you are from the scruffy end of Marlborough Street, and, like me, prefer real potatoes simply because your palate is not cultured enough to appreciate Smash, which is dead posh.Poppy I actually ate the stuff so I think I can decide for myself whether it was real creamy mashed potatoes or smash! And it definitely was smash unless they have discovered real potatoes by now...

Sorry, Sandra, did not mean to doubt your word- it's just that I asked them about it in June and got a horrified response at the very idea!Sandra wrote:Poppy I actually ate the stuff so I think I can decide for myself whether it was real creamy mashed potatoes or smash! Yes I think you are right, whatever it was it wasn't lovely creamy, buttery, tasty mashed tatties(which we eat at the scruffy end of Marlborough Stecm wrote:Or maybe they had a mash mix-up/crisis situation in the kitchen and had to resort to Smash rather than admit to having no tatties.

Actually, I'm sure that happened in an episode of Crossroads once.ecm wrote:Or maybe they had a mash mix-up/crisis situation in the kitchen and had to resort to Smash rather than admit to having no tatties.

Head chef Bernard Booth was most displeased with Wee Shughie as I remember.
Anyway, Xmas meal, yes Foresters sounds a fine choice. They all do actually.

I still haven't voted. I quite like the idea of the Sheep Heid taking care of the food and the drink in one place but it is a bit of a walk back home and I sort of feel we should support more local businesses.
We've been to Sizzler's and The Dalriada for POL meals (and very nice they were too) but I reckon to be fair somewhere else should have a turn of our custom.
However, if we're having a luchtime 'do' then I don't often feel hungry enough for a curry for lunch.
How big is the restaurant bit upstairs at the Sheep Heid? I have this vague memory that it's not that big upstairs and downstairs would have us a bit scattered from each other wouldn't it?
Decisions, decisions

It would certainly be big enough for us, I think. It's a nice, cosy room.Marya wrote:

Long walk home???? You big softie!
It can't be more than a mile, if that. It's downhill all the way and in a relatively straight line.
It might help sober us all up.
Yeah but think of all the miles we'll have put in already tramping up and down the stairs and out to the courtyard to have our inter-course puffs.ecm wrote:Long walk home???? You big softie!

There's an answer to that. There's a balcony accessible from the upstairs dining room on which smoking is allowed, so no more excuses.Marya wrote:Yeah but think of all the miles we'll have put in already tramping up and down the stairs and out to the courtyard to have our inter-course puffs.ecm wrote:Long walk home????
