Mobile phone
John Humphries mentioned on the Today programme this morning that he does not possess a mobile phone. Is there anyone else (apart from me) who is still holding out?

Did you hear his interview with John Prescott just after eight? I thought it was hilarious - especially when he asked him about fox hunting and JP said it wasn't really an important issue!Gedge wrote:John Humphries mentioned on the Today programme this morning
All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt!

Though having said that I was assuming you were Scottish -
How old would you be, if you didn't know how old you are?

I think there's another thread somewhere that connects this glove fetish to Jay. And of course you were also implicated, Porty, if my memory serves me right...Porty wrote:Do you spend a lot of time in there? Its not really my business but wouldn't there be more room without the mobile in there too?
Every Day Counts
No mobile for me either.

Did not see the interview, however, sure John Prescot would have had plenty to say on Cream Cakes and Jaguars! Now that is an important issue ...for him.

I have one for emergencies in my bag, which is now a lonely soul, with no gloves to keep it company. But mine is an elderly model. I can't get Porty Online on it - though I can get some sites. Now I mention it, can someone explain - in non-jargon, non-techno-ese - for dumb redheads (sorry, Mimptymr magnolia wrote:I think there's another thread somewhere that connects this glove fetish to Jay. No apologies required Jay - you're right on target!
I got mine free with a credit card, it's a bit on the big side now compared to modern ones, and it gets laughed at when I bring it out. Having said that I tend not to carry it and if I do, it tends not to work because it needs re-charged.

Mine's not a refugee from 'Star Trek' either - doesn't flip up, isn't mteallic and pretty colours, and doesn't have a posh screen. I only gave in and got one because I had so many tedious train journeys where I was not going to arrive on time, and had to ring people who were meeting me, to say I was going to be very late. And, to be honest, it is a bit of security if you travel alone.

This is most heartening. I thought I was the only person left without one. Does anyone else still find their use irritating? I feel that people who don't have one now must have made a positive decision not to get one. Everyone seems to presume that mobile phone use is completely acceptable but there must be a sizable silent minority who are putting up with it.
Why do mobile phone users feel that signs in railway carriages saying "Do not use your mobile phone" don't apply to them?
Why do mobile phone users feel they have a right to inflict their horrendous ring tones on other people in a public place? (Additional query - why would anyone choose to subject themselves to that sound? but I guess if they do it out of everyone else's earshot that's up to them.
Do mobile phone users appreciate that some people object to them?

You wouldn't think so if my bus journeys are anything to go by. Take this morning for example. I was coming home from Tescos at Musselburgh and a female rings no less than four people in rapid succession to tell each of them, very loudly (practically shouting in fact), that she's on the bus.Gedge wrote:This is most heartening. "Hiya, it's me (pause) a'hm oan the bus (pause) aye, the bus (pause) right, bye then"
Four times, almost word for word each time. I really wanted to batter her senseless with my sesame seeded bloomer (only 69p).
I very rarely can make it home on a bus from work at Meadowbank to Porty without enduring some loudmouth's side of a conversation. These conversations are, without exception, inane and hugely infuriating.
Someone in my room has that piece of music from the Benny Hill show on their phone. You know the bit at the end of the show where there's a speeded up chase involving a variety of scantily clad ladies and outraged members of the public running around the place.Poppy wrote:...........and don't get me started on the plonkers who have their mobiles going off at work!!![]()

Good News...ECM....A new law in Europe means it is now legal to club someone with the offending mobile if it plays Benny Hill!!!!ecm wrote:

Totally agree with you on the annoying places people use their phones.
One day when I was in the bank the person in front of me just got to the counter when his phone rang. Did he ignore it or switch it off ? No the numpty answered it and carried on a conversation while the poor teller tried to serve him. No manners !!!
Last night I was at a concert and although being told to switch all mobiles off,one girl sat and sent text messages throughout the whole thing, and NO, before you ask, the concert wasn't that bad, it was very enjoyable.
I could go on but it could take all night.

I too was a mobile phone hater until the family bought me one as a present. I am now trapped by the fear that if I go out without it something awful will happen to my whole family and I won't know
On the upside. I think my ring tone is great. It reminds me of Billy Connolly and it makes me smile when I hear it
And how else do you stalk your teenagers??????
