New restaurant - Sizzlers

Post by DG » 27 Nov 2004, 22:38

The previous Datta restaurant looks close to opening up again as Sizzler (I think). Looks like the man who previously owner Pizza Paradise now owns this new one. Seems really nice from what I've seen so far - possibly Turkish? There's a great Turkish cafe on the shore at Leith that does amazing food and has really friendly service - they give you wee tasters of food and don't mind you sitting for a long time over one coffee. I think I've seen the man who has this in Sizzler. What a nice thought!

Does anyone know anything for definate? Most of the above is wishful thinking.

DG - do you mean Truva along at Leith? It's one of our favourite places. Would be great if this new restaurant is anything like it :)

Yes - Truva - that's the one. Isn't it great. I always feel I could be anywhere when I'm there ...if you know what I mean?!

Fingers crossed for this new one.

Dada family have been very happy patrons of Truva for years!

Truva do Turkish breakfast, which is nice and refreshing and just like you get on your holidays. Cheese, meat, toast, stuffed vine leaf and pickle.

Some of the sweet things are a bit too sweet for my tooth - but nice nevertheless - and when you've had something that has been steeped in honey you don't need to put any sugar in your coffee!

The piece de resistance at Truva has to be the fact that they serve Turkish coffee - completely different from espresso but one hell of a hit.

Truva is so authentic that all you'd need is a bit of sunshine and some stray cats and you could be in Turkey.

I thought the guy from Pizza Paradise now had the Pizza Hut outlet.
Must be making a good profit if he's branching out again 8)

A menu has now gone up. It's actually a pizza/pasta/Mexican, opening this Thursday...

Sounds like he has his market sussed. Tasty fat loaded products has a real chance of success in Portobello. Lots have tried hardly amy have failed.

The most exciting bit is that he's open 'til 1000 or 1100 pm. Whahoo!

Now we need to get Scotmid open later and we'll be back in business for the late-night shopping and Latte run, just like the old days!

Well, Sizzlers opened last night. It looks great - subdued lighting, warm colours, nicely decorated tables and smartly dressed friendly staff. I do hope that we all (and the rest of Portobello who don't look at the forum!) manage to support this restaurant. It would be nice to help it do well and continue. A lot of time and work has been put into making the best use of the space.

It is open from 8am to 10pm throughout the week, and open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. It serves cooked or continental breakfast, filled rolls, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, pasta, pizza, steak, chicken, fresh fish, and nice coffees.

We'll definately try it out this weekend :D

May bump into some of you there!

Gosh - it may even tempt me out! And I don't usually 'eat-out' in Porty unless I have guests staying! It sounds great! :D :D

Had our tea at Sizzlers tonight - really lovely. Great monkfish in a lime and coriander sauce and seafood spaggetti. And the desserts...mmm!

Worth a visit :D

Lizzie, it's where Datta used to be - that really nice Indian takeaway that sadly closed.

Thats the one Lizzie.
We just came home from a walk to find a leaflet from them offering 10% discount so we'll have to try it out now.
Does anyone know if they do carry out as well as sit in?

Thanks ecm - does it not tell you in your leaflet if they do carry outs :?: Just going out for a walk myself, think I'll check it out and at the same time while I'm along that way go and have a look at Portys purple balls, rumour has it they are very nice
Did you not see them while you were out :?:

The leaflet doesn't say anything about carry out, so it probably doesn't.

If you really insist on discussing P o P and I's balls, shouldn't the topic be over in the Matters forum.

Well, lunch was good. Food was good and great value, and the owner was great - very friendly and helpful.

The only negative thing I would say is that it's not really child-friendly (well, small child, at least). Small children in restaurants do eventually get restless and need to be able to move around at least a little bit, and while the owner was good with the kids, someone else (his father?) was obviously very stressed by them, and kept complaining about things, which left us feeling very unwelcome. They weren't particularly badly behaved - just a bit restless, but there were wine glasses on all the tables, so even walking past a table was quite a dangerous thing for them. I would go back, but probably not with the children, as it was too stressful wondering what that chap would complain about next.

Still, I thought the owner was very nice and very accommodating, and the food was good so I recommend it. :)

I think its ok to be a bit child "unfriendly", if its not the market they are aimong for then why chase?. Adults need their space too. Having said that Portobello is not to well endowed with child welcoming cafe's.

Looking from the outside,in, to me Sizzlers looks like it has too many tables crambed together. However, high density of tables makes the atmosphere in some places. We will see.

We checked it out this Saturday, and I have to say the food was excellent, (bruschetta, burritos. and the tiramisu is actually the best I've ever tasted). Service good, waiters good, but if you do go, TAKE CASH, as they haven't yet had the card reader delivered.

Same comment above regarding squashed-in nature. Even I had problems not knocking over chairs after a glass of wine or two, let alone the kiddies...
