I love Porty...

Post by bellybabe » 05 Aug 2004, 20:28

...(the place, not the chap, sorry Porty!)

Decided to escape the madness of children's bedtime this evening and take the dog for a long walk along the prom. Threw some frisbee for him, had a stranger ask if she could throw it for him too, watched parents teaching bairns to ride bikes, walked down and had a look at the sculpture since the tide was in, walked barefoot in the sand listening to the waves and playing with the dog, bagged my first porty person (and was awarded ten points for being brave enough to say so!), watched the yachts sailing by, saw the swimming people all swim out in their yellow hats, watched the jet skiers roar by, sat on the wall watching the world go by, heard bagpipes at one end and what looked like a lute at the other, and I thought...what a wonderful place we live in.

yes it is wonderful place to live, have only lived in Porty just about a year but love it! Sometimes after a stressful day in the office a walk by the sea totally clears the head! :D

Bellybabe,
My son Dan and I and his cousin Andrew were out and about the prom/beach at the same time as you! We may well have passed each other.
I'm not sure if Dan has ever set foot on the Prom. He prefers to negotiate the length of it by walking along the wall.
I took them to see the sculpture - they were less than impressed but I thought it interesting.
Clocked the lute player and the yellow capped swimmers too.
On the down side there was a group of about 10 young neds hanging about the Joppa loos smoking, spitting and scowling.
Spent a couple of quid in the arcade and then had an ice lolly from Arcaris on the road back home.
Lovely.

And i've still not finished painting that gate! About 1/3 left to go...

But it did need a lot of prep - it was more rust than metal.

My head is always perfectly clear little man,
perhaps you should spend some time on the beach, or better still take a nice long walk off a short pier

it's a shame that the Portobello Pier is Long gone.

i have to say living ten minutes from the beach makes it an effort to get there for a lazy teenager like me However occasionally when arriving at 4am off the night bus me & my mates take a stroll along the beach to sober up and it is a great experience. you practically have the whole place to yourself and i really shouldn't take it for granted.

Porty is for sure Paradise especially with beer goggles and darkness!

oh and before any assumptions are made we do stay away from Bath street and although we may be ' drunk' an at times ' idiots' we are the harmless sorts.
there's no excuses you have the same length of time as shakespeare and van goth.

Hi Flearoy! Welcome to the Forum. Nothing wrong with strolling home feeling tired and emotional. Do it myself sometimes.

And you're right, the beach is magical at night. You'll see me there after dark one night soon, camera round my neck, tripod under one arm, photographing the tidal sculpture by moonlight. I'm just watching the tides and the clouds, and waiting for a clear night...

Aah...light dawns. Now I know what you really mean when you say that. You mean...hammered! And there I was thinking it meant you were just a real 90s guy (what's a noughties guy like, btw?)...

Flearoy, welcome. As I'm sure you've noticed we're very fond of teenagers here  . As long as they stay away from Bath Street, of course. Not in my backyard and all that - but in my case I mean that literally!

I know what you mean about a ten minute walk making it too much effort. I used to live about as far inland as you get in the UK, and would travel for hours for a glimpse of water. Now it's five minutes' walk, sometimes it's just too far  ...

Don't believe her for a minute Flearoy!! I'm the only friendly face a teenager will find on this board! :alien:
I think you're very brave even admitting that you are one!

Seriously, I'm not anti-teenager. I just have frequent problems with my neighbours, who are well known to the police, which I think shows I'm not randomly picking on anyone of a certain age! And I'm well aware that the problem neighbours are not all teenagers by any means.

And as for drunken idiots - I see far more of those aged 20+ than those under! On Wednesday night we had to help up one who crashed down on the road behind us as we were on our way to the bus stop... Between us and another couple (anyone here?) who stopped to help, we got him to the bench outside the police station and then ran for the bus. And I can say in all honesty I've never had to do that for a teenager, but in Portobello i've had to do it plenty of times for men over 40!

And i've been known to be a drunken idiot myself from time to time - or should I say "tired and emotional"?!

aye well i have to say the teenagers in my family certainly learnt all their anti social habits from a 40+ frequent " tired and emothional " man ( known here as 'Porty' btw- known to me as the man who sometimes sits at the dinner table.)

but as long as there's people like you belly babe returning my dad and his mates to benchs around portobello- i'll always know where to find him.

anyway, the only reason i gave away my age is to give a reason for 1.) the poor use of langauge and 2.) the slight ignorance that might shine through.

i can only hope that those things will improve with age.....
